Little Miami asking for earned income tax

Little Miami Local Schools are asking voters to pass a 1 percent earned income tax to fund its operating expenses. If the tax does not pass, the district will have two chances to pass an operating levy early next year, but if they are unable to find a way to bring in more revenue, the district will face $4 million in cuts by the 2009-2010 school year. For even more information, click here. Ross Local Schools in Butler County have used an income tax to fund their schools, and now they are asking voters to change that to an earned income tax. I have read all of the editorials pertaining to the earned income tax levy, which failed. Let me tell you why I voted against it. In the past, when the school board suspended bus service, due to a failed levy, which they are threatening again, someone I knew went to a Little Miami school board meeting, asking why they provided bus service for a select group of students for extracurricular activities, but denied bus service to students for school. This person was abruptly escorted out of the meeting for questioning this bad decision making on the part of the board. I also know of students in the middle school, who were recently moved to the high school; because, there were empty class rooms not being used. My graduating class of 1973 had more seniors than what graduated last year from LMHS. Where are all of these masses of students, that the school board warned us about, when asking for more money for schools? The school board was more open to the public in the 70’s, spent our money responsibly, and was accountable for their spending. I don’t feel the school board now is using our money wisely. Take for instance the land on Zoar Rd., purchased to build a school, but never used. That land is leased, as farming land, for a fraction of what it could be leased for. I will consider voting for additional money for Little Miami schools, when the school board proves to me that they are cutting costs, spending the money wisely, and opening up their books and business to public scrutiny.
