Little Miami asking for earned income tax

Little Miami Local Schools are asking voters to pass a 1 percent earned income tax to fund its operating expenses. If the tax does not pass, the district will have two chances to pass an operating levy early next year, but if they are unable to find a way to bring in more revenue, the district will face $4 million in cuts by the 2009-2010 school year. For even more information, click here. Ross Local Schools in Butler County have used an income tax to fund their schools, and now they are asking voters to change that to an earned income tax. I will be voting NO to this tax! Gas prices up, food prices climbing, Duke will be raising their rates, and who is supposed to pay for the big bank bail out? I can’t afford a 1% tax on top of what I already pay in property taxes! Stop this now! And yes, I do have a child in the school district. I’m willing to make sacrifices to get my child to school or whatever scare tactics they throw at us.

We won’t be voting for it either. We were big supporters of the last levy but this is too much. I’m hearing a lot of the same tactics they used the last time; no sports, no transportation, cutting programs, etc. I also remembered the assurances that they gave us that it was going to be the last levy for a long time. They’re saying the same thing now. With the cost of everything going up, not to mention the unexpected costs we’ve had to incur due to damage to our home from the storm, we are literally streched about as far as we can be. I’m afraid for when it snaps. Please, don’t support another tax hike on us.

The Little Miami school board is already discussing voting on this issue again. It has been said that a special election will be held ASAP should the cuurent issue fail. The excuse will be that wording on the ballot was incorrect, not the fact that people have had enough of taxes. The mistake was made by the local Board of Elections AND the office of Ohio Secretary of State. This mistake was made and voters have been notified. Just know this, nobody is trying to pull a fast one here…move on. Voters should be asking how this levy can be effective. If jobs continue to leave this area the district and others around it will shrink. When this happens the income tax leaves with the jobs. The property tax is on going but let jobs and families leave the district and your schools collect less money. Oh sure, fool yourselves and tell yourself how great the area is and people in our district have steady jobs and we are growing. The folks in Mason still tell themselves this. Reality is swiftly catching up with them. Ask the folks of Springboro. They know how the sham of “cutting programs” works. The school boards give threats of this but in most cases would not shame the district into it. They always want to keep a good name. Poeple should send a strong message by voting NO on this issue. Do not let Little Miami schools become another district with the hidden problems of Mason, Springboro and others.

One thing is missing in this request for more money for the Little Miami Schools, accountability. LMHS now graduates less students, than when I graduate in 1973. There is still wasted space and empty class rooms. I want quality schools;but, also fiscal responsibility and accountability. Every effort should be made to stop the wasteful spending, open the books for public scrutiny, and engage the public for ideas on how to save money.
