Autistic boy punished for his symptoms

Although it involves no deaths or natural disasters, the story of an autistic Florida boy who was kicked out of his class is a tragic one. Teacher Wendy Portillo has been relieved of her teaching duties for her alleged tactics toward a 5-year-old boy that mirror the reality show “Survivor.” The boy’s mother claims that her son was punished for symptoms of his disability, such as humming and eating his homework. She says Portillo went too far last week when she kicked the boy out of class, and then allowed the other students to vote on whether he should be allowed back in. Although Portillo still has a job within the school, hundreds of parents of autistic children have already signed an online petition to get her fired.

Had she did that kind of garbage to my autistic nephew, she wouldn’t need to worry about losing her job. Now her teeth; that’s a different story. She’d definitely lose those, courtesy of my shoe.

I’m not surprised by the article at all; this kind of treatment of individuals with autism happens all too often. My best advice to parents is to live in a trailer - then when things don’t work out at one school system, you can tow it to the next. I believe the parents erred by contacting the school resource officer - those people are paid by the school to do their bidding. If they have the means, they should have gotten competent, local legal advice. Unfortunately, we as parents have to enforce the laws on these issues.
