Autistic boy punished for his symptoms

Although it involves no deaths or natural disasters, the story of an autistic Florida boy who was kicked out of his class is a tragic one. Teacher Wendy Portillo has been relieved of her teaching duties for her alleged tactics toward a 5-year-old boy that mirror the reality show “Survivor.” The boy’s mother claims that her son was punished for symptoms of his disability, such as humming and eating his homework. She says Portillo went too far last week when she kicked the boy out of class, and then allowed the other students to vote on whether he should be allowed back in. Although Portillo still has a job within the school, hundreds of parents of autistic children have already signed an online petition to get her fired.
