Karrie Brown, English teacher at Pioneer Career and Technology Center in Shelby, Ohio, figured out a way to get students who previously failed English classes to be interested in the subject. She used a program called Read 180, a reading intervention program that looks and feels like MySpace and Facebook, integral social networks for most American teens. Using Read 180, Brown facilitates differentiated learning for reading and writing through a Wiki, a collection of Web pages and other documents that can be created and edited individually or collectively on line. In the name of English Language Arts, Brown’s students post pictures, research projects, thoughts and questions on Wikispace.

Registration is underway for Miami Middletown’s Summer Session III, a 6-week term that begins June 30 and ends Aug. 8. Courses offered during this term include accounting, art history, botany, business technology, computer information technology, classics, communication, computer science, economics, educational leadership, educational psychology, teacher education, film studies, family studies and social work, geology, gerontology, history (world, western civilization and England), math, microbiology, music, physical education and sports studies, sociology, Spanish and zoology.
Summer session course information is available on the campus web site or by calling the campus at 727-3200 (1-86-MIAMI-MID toll free).

The Little Miami school board awarded the contract for its PantherTurf installation at the high school to the Motz Group, based in Cincinnati, who came in with the lowest bid at $791,000. The Motz Group has laid fields for several college and professional sports teams, as well as area high schools, including Kings, Elder, Mason, Monroe, Goshen, Springboro and Winton Woods.

Lebanon approved Tuesday a contract that will give its teachers raises of 2.9 and 2.6 percent in the next two years. Last year’s cost-of-living increase was 2.3 percent.
Is the raise sufficient? How much should teachers be paid?

With allegations coming over the weekend regarding another Mason schools employee being involved in inappropriate actions, the question begging to be asked is, what disciplinary action should be taken against teachers who participate in these activities, ranging from drinking with former students to engaging in sexual acts with under-age students?
