Should schools use Twitter/Facebook?

If you read this blog, you probably already are familiar with social networking pages. I thought it was interesting that Lakota’s new public engagement/marketing firm suggested it unblock Twitter and Facebook to join the rest of the social networking world. I am not sure if they will take that advice, but it raises an interesting point. Could the district better connect to the community through such an avenue? Would you become a fan of Lakota and look for updated posts on happenings?

Many schools block these sites, seeing them as a threat to students and teachers. However, districts like Butler Tech have embraced the technology, building networks and a fan base online. In fact, Butler Tech is so involved with the sites, they send out tweets whenever we write a story on the district!
