Would your kids walk?

The board will be considering an option for walking zones during the 2010-2011 school year. More than 3,500 Lakota students live within a mile from school. In an independent audit of its transportation system, Transpar Group recommended Lakota eliminate its “everyone rides” policy. This would promote greener living ( a township initiative) and save the district hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Thousands of students are on routing lists, but then don’t consistently take the bus. Would you be in favor of an opt-out busing policy? Many schools have “walkers” who either walk or are driven to school.

The district is working with the townships and neighborhoods to try to develop safe walking zones. It plans to hold community engagement events to hear what parents think of the idea. In some cases, Business Manager Chris Passarge said it may be cheaper for the district to build sidewalks in a neighborhood than to pay for a bus to go through it. Officials also would look into crossing guards and other safety measures.

Do you live in an area that might benefit from sidewalks? What areas do you see as possible dangers? I can name one: Lakota East High School is surrounded by sidewalks to nowhere, but would be a great walking possibility. Township officials said they are looking at building sidewalks on Yankee and Cincinnati-Dayton roads to connect the school to area neighborhoods. I imagine they also would need to install a walking/don’t walk sign.

Where else could you see the potential for improvements to become a more pedestrian friendly community?
