Haverkos says wait to endorse Strickland’s plan

I got this press release in my e-mail box this morning. I will follow up with Susan Haverkos on this issue as the budget process unfolds, but here is what the State Board of Education has to say about it.

At its monthly meeting in Columbus Tuesday the state board is expected to approve a resolution commending the governor’s education plan.

Board members say they aren’t necessarily endorsing the plan — many details of which have not been developed — but believe the governor is headed in the right direction with a “student-centered” focus on preparing students to meet the demands of college and the workplace.

“The board reserves the right to make recommendations on certain parts as details become known,” said Robin C. Hovis, a board member from Millersburg.

Board President Jennifer Sheets, of Pomeroy, said the resolution — recommended unanimously by a board subcommittee Monday afternoon — sends the message that the 19-member panel is supportive of the governor’s efforts and stands ready to help develop and implement the proposal.

Susan M. Haverkos, of West Chester, is poised to be the lone board member to oppose the resolution. She said she supports Strickland’s efforts but with so many details unknown, she’s unable to evaluate the impact on school districts in her southwest Ohio district.

“I understand the desire to do this, but I think it’s premature,” she said.

What fool would vote to support any deal when the details have yet to be determined? I applaud Mrs. Haverkos for her lone courage to stand up against what appears to be a stacked deck of Strickland insiders, bent on assisting the Governor in the takeover of our schools. I’ll bet no other BOE members have taken the time to listen to their citizens, but that’s what you get with OEA funded and appointed members.

Yes, I agree Mary. He is trying to push through some vague “Plan” before we know all the contents. Sort of like President Obama. It appears to me the Governor is trying to reduce visibility and accountability.

Jeff Hardin, of Milford joined Susan Haverkos in voting against the governor’s plan. Hardin said he gave “the plan a 30% score. That is a failing grade in any school I have ever been in.”
