Presidential race

I don’t know how many of you have attended political rallies in the area, but I saw several thousand at the Sarah Palin speech Friday. We had three reporters there (including me) conducting interviews and giving live Web updates for readers who were interested in the event, but couldn’t be there. I think it was a great learning experience for the students at East and West who were given press passes to cover the event for their high school publications. Members of the Lakota West band also played at the event.

I talked to several enthusiastic students who are very much into politics. In fact, some students from the district will be taking a trip to Washington, D.C. for the presidential inauguration. What an amazing learning experience!

How have you approached the election with your children? Do you talk about the issues? Have they been caught up in the frenzy? I had a funny conversation with a Lakota employee who said her 6-year-old son heard on the bus that if a certain candidate won, students would have to attend school on the weekends and would lose recess. Ask your children what they think. You might be surprised by how much this election has been a part of their lives both in the classroom and on the school bus or playground.
