Still no contract

The Lakota Education Association and the district will be heading into a third round of negotiations with a federal mediator after failed attempts to reach a contract yesterday, Sept. 9. The meeting, which started at 1 p.m. finished up at about 6:30 p.m. said Superintendent Mike Taylor. He said talks went well and the negotiating teams have agreed on about 15 to 20 items.

Taylor said at least two more sessions have been scheduled and maybe more. There will be another meeting in September without the mediator, and then another one in Oct. with the mediator.

The second bargaining session with the mediator followed a protest at Monday night’s school board meeting when more than 300 teachers sat in a silent show of solidarity, wearing black shirts to signify mourning over contract difficulties, and red buttons that read “Together We Can.” The LEA reported on its Web site that it has made progress on several items after five months of bargaining, but the positions on compensation and healthcare “remain far apart.”

According to the Ohio Department of Education, the average teacher salary in Ohio is $53,410 and at Lakota it is $56,633. In the current contract, teachers pay 10 percent of their health benefits and have full dental coverage. They get 15 sick days and three personal days that may accrue over time for a payout at retirement.

The union’s contract, approved Sept. 1, 2005, expired Aug. 31, 2007 and both sides agreed to continue the current contract until an agreement is reached. Until then, negotiations are conducted in private. The Aug. 25 meeting lasted six hours and the union made its third comprehensive proposal that was countered by the administration. The union represents 1,235 full- and part-time teachers for the seventh largest school district in the state.
