Excellent with Distinction

So Lakota did it! They were excellent with distinction.

Attached is a link explaining the report cards. Lakota did not make three of four requirements for Adequate Yearly Progress, but all it took was one. The district passed with flying colors when it came to the newly added report card feature — value added. Essentially, someone came up with a formula to track a students progress in a year’s time. If the child progresses more than a year, no matter what grade level he or she is in, then the district gets credit. So, let’s say John comes into the district at a first-grade level, but is supposed to be in the fifth-grade. If he shows progress and growth, then the district gets credit. If he shows growth two years in a row, the district gets bumped even higher.

This was the case for Lakota, who earned the top honor.

Lakota Receives State’s Top Award

Lakota Excellent with Distinction Lakota Local Schools is proud to announce that the State’s official designation for Lakota is Excellent with Distinction. Lakota achieved 30 out of 30 indicators, reflecting test scores by grade level. Lakota also increased their graduation and attendance rates and their performance index rose to 102.9, which was an increase over last year. “We are thrilled to announce that Lakota has achieved the rating of excellent with distinction,” remarked Superintendent Mike Taylor. “We are pleased that our instruction is meeting the needs of our students, and we will be constantly working to enhance that instruction to serve our students on an individual basis,” continued Taylor.

To perform at the excellent level, Lakota must meet at least 94% of the performance indicators and have a performance index of 100 or higher.

Performance Indicators: 95% (2003) 100%(2004) 96%(2005) 100%(2006) 97%(2007) 100%(2008)

Performance Index: 95.4(2003) 98.6(2004) 100.8(2005) 103.2(2006) 102.5(2007) 102.9(2008)

This is the 7th year in a row for Lakota to achieve the excellent designation, but the first to have the “with distinction” tag added to the rating. “In addition to our excellence in academics, we are also pleased that our students excel in and have the opportunities for athletics, the performing arts as well as academic and social organizations. All of these activities that engage our students help to ensure that they are well rounded and ready to face the 21st century world,” stated Superintendent Taylor.

In response to the community engagement work done last year, Lakota began communicating with residents about potential concerns over some of the subgroups meeting the No Child Left Behind portion of the report card entitled Adequate Yearly Progress earlier this summer. This year, Ohio has a new “value-added” measurement on the school building and district report cards that shows the amount of student academic growth for the same group of students for previous school years. With the value added calculation, Lakota met the AYP designation for the State.

Administrators and leadership however are working to ensure that Lakota continues to meet their goals and ensure that all of Lakota’ students are receiving the instruction that they require. “With our district experiencing constant growth, we are working to ensure that all of our students are receiving the education that they need in order to succeed to their fullest potential,” remarked Board President Jamie Green.
