Safe entries next building goal

The Board of Education voted Monday, Aug. 11 to start the negotiation process with up to three architecture firms to look at renovation plans across the district. Business Manager Chris Passarge told me this was something needed before his facilities team could come up with a viable plan for school improvements. He said they want to ensure student safety by building secure entrances at each building, but right now they don’t know what it would cost or how difficult it would be.

The district’s top three choices are Voorhis, Slone, Welsh, Crossland Architects, Inc., Cole, Russell + Fanning Howey Associates Architects and SHP Leading Design, Inc. The district facilities committee made up of school officials and community members reviewed the groups after listening to the companies and reviewing logistical proposals. The district will negotiate services with the first choice and then down the line.

The board also voted to approve the bid of R.A. Miller Construction Company to renovate the bus parking lot for $147,500, which was $27,500 under the original bid. Apparently the concrete over the gas tanks is caving in, but the district has inspected the underground tanks, and they are fine. This is phase one in an effort to revamp the parking lot.
