New levies fail in Ohio
I started wondering about the passage rate of levies in Ohio this week. I just got this data from a press release and it is interesting.
While 28 percent of 32 issues passed Aug. 5, of those that were requests for new money, (not renewals, replacements or Ohio Schools Facilities Commission funds) only one of 16 requests passed. Four of the OSFC building proposals passed of nine proposals. One replacement operating levy passed and three of the five renewal levies passed.
Lakota is going to be seeking funds soon. Officials have been lobbying at the state house trying to draw attention to the funding discrepancy with fast-growing districts. Currently, for each new child that enters Lakota, there is no new funding. There is very little help or none at all with new buildings to house these children.
I am predicting that this funding crisis is not going away, and at some point, someone at the state level is going to have to revamp the way schools are funded. Do you think Gov. Ted Strickland will be the one to fix it? School officials aren’t holding their breath for this year or even next year. When do you think will happen? What will it look like?
