Freshman schools

I just had a great talk with East Freshman Associate Principal Suzzana Davis about the equality of the two buildings when the school year begins. For the first time, East and West will have separate facilities for the freshman, making two separate high school “campuses.” The goal is to ensure a better 9-12 high school experience, she said.

Of course, East’s building is new. With that come new desks and new classrooms. However, she stressed it does not mean it is “better.” The books will be split evenly. All classrooms will have 3M projector technology. Shuttle buses will continue to run to both high schools, and East students will not be permitted to walk across Bethany Road. Teachers are split between the buildings with an equal representation of experience.

“This is an exciting time for our high schools in general for all four of our campuses,” she said. “It gives us all a connection for our staff; it gives us a connection for our students; and it gives us a connection for our parents.”

A new building doesn’t mean a better education, she said.

What are your thoughts on the split?
