Miami University VOA
What in the world is a cupola? It was a question I asked myself when Miami officials began talking about the crown jewel of the Learning Center. I looked it up in the dictionary — yes, I am a nerd like that — and I discovered it is a building topper. But, for Miami University, it isn’t just any building topper. It is that fun little box thing you see on every one of its buildings dating back to the 1930s. So, I went to a cupola raising this morning and signed a scroll that someday may be pulled down from this high tower for historians to read. If I am alive to see that day, I can proudly say my name was listed among the construction workers, government officials, school representatives and alumni present. Here is another new word I learned — finial. That is where the scroll will be safely stored. I think a finial looks like a lightning rod. The finial’s connected to the cupola. The cupola’s connected to the learning center. The learning center’s connected to the Voice of America park…and well…according to Miami officials…we are all connected to one big happy Miami University family! Unless of course you graduated from Ohio University, and then you are out of luck.
Check out our photo gallery online later today to see the action, but for now, here is a photo of the lovely structure built in Virginia. I arrived on a flat bed truck last night at 10 p.m. I wonder what drivers thought while passing this massive box? (which, by the way, was ordered from a cupola company online).
