AD Payne leaving CJ for Fairborn

DAYTON - As athletic director, Jon Payne was instrumental in Chaminade Julienne filling head football and girls basketball coaching positions at the high school this past spring.

Now, CJ needs to find a replacement for Payne.

“CJ was really good to me,” said Payne, who was approved by the Fairborn Board of Education on Thursday as its new AD.

“It was a very difficult decision. Basically, it just boiled down to making that personal decision for myself to go ahead and take a chance on making that move.”

The Fairborn position opened when Jim Smerz left to become Beavercreek’s new AD. That job became available when Ed Zink retired as the Beavers’ AD.

Payne officially won’t start at Fairborn until July 25. However, he said that an agreement was reached that he would stay at CJ until a new AD was transitioned into the school.

“I’ll be there as much as I possibly can to help CJ transition in a new person,” he said.

“I want to do everything that I can to help the new person and help the CJ athletic program and the CJ community.”

Payne previously also was the AD at West Carrollton. He returned to the area and CJ last year at this time after several years in education in Illinois.

Ironically, Smerz was the longtime AD at Miamisburg when Payne was at West Carrollton.

“We’ve been friends since the old MML days and had a lot of good rivalries when he was at Miamisburg and I was at West Carrollton,” Payne said.

“Hopefully, I can at least do what he’s done and maybe even a little bit more.”

Jon deserves to be sainted for putting up with all the internal crap going on at CJ after Raiff embarrassed the administration. He’s walking into a good situation at Fairborn because Smerz hired some good coaches and he has an administration which supports athletics. Plus he’s going to be making real money and not getting his reward in heaven as the Catholic schools promise. Good addition to the GWOC

Care to explain further how Mike did what you say he did to the administration? Or you going to hide behind your computer?

Be careful what you wish for Fairborn… Ask anyone in WC (and CJ) their opinion of what he did to the athletic programs. Never was someone so appropriately named.

WOW, I went to the DDN internet site to find some interesting information on the locals H.S. girls, who won the AAU tourney yesterday and all I see is the childish negativity of the few. Can’t you find anything positive to celebrate?

I agree with Don, and I say congratulations to the 2 Fairborn girls on the AAU championship team. Mr. Smerz did a good job while at Fairborn, the new AD has some talent this year on Football and Basketball hopefully it will be that way for years to come but no matter what We will always back Fairborn sports whoever is the AD.
