Sonny Unger Foundation to present a night with the Hawk brothers

The following is a media release from Centerville H.S. about this spring’s annual Sonny Unger Foundation:

CENTERVILLE - On Thursday, May 19, the Sonny Unger Foundation will host an evening with AJ & Ryan Hawk at Wright State University Nutter Center. The event will be hosted by Jerry Rudzinski, an Alter graduate and a former Buckeye captain.

Both AJ and Ryan Hawk had outstanding football careers at Centerville. Ryan holds records for career passing yards (5,013) and single season passing yards (1,557); he was also the All-Ohio First Team Quarterback in his senior year.

Ryan’s younger brother, AJ continued the Hawk legacy and was a two time All State player in high school before going to The Ohio State University where AJ won the Lombardi Award in 2005. AJ currently plays for the Green Bay Packers who won this year’s Super Bowl XLV.

Sonny Unger was a football player and a 1963 graduate of Centerville. Shortly after graduation, Sonny joined the Army and was killed while serving in Vietnam. e was awarded the Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts and an Oak Leaf Cluster for his heroic actions.

In 1967, the Sonny Unger Memorial Scholarship Foundation was established. Every year, scholarship money is awarded to two senior football players. These players are deemed to have made a valuable playing contribution to the team, possess and exhibit outstanding character, have been leaders among their teammates and role models for younger players.

The Sonny Unger Dinner will be held at the Wright State University Nutter Center on Thursday, May 19. The doors open at 5PM and dinner will be served at 6PM. A limited number of tickets to this annual sold out event are currently on sale and available through the CHS Athletic Office.

This is by far the finest event in the city of Dayton. An equivalent to the Bogey Busters minus the golf. Great athletes/speakers/people come in and it’s for a great cause that seems to be long forgotten in our livelihood; The respect and tribute due to a brave young man who exemplified real courage, who passed up a promising athletic career for a greater cause to serve and protect his country.I’ve attended this event from the time it was formed in a rather small one-room restaurant to the magnitude it’s taken today…..The committee putting this on really cares about the people and I look forward to another wonderful evening.

Great event for a worthy cause and can be fun. But listening to the self-important Centerville people tell each other how great they are and their program is the best in the world can be a little much to take. Hearing all that Elk Pride crap over and over and over can be sickening.

Weeb don’t be a dweeb!!! All because you came from a city school where brawls and gun fire were the only things that brought you and others together, don’t get on a real school in the suburbs that shows the togetherness and commitment that is lacking all across the board in our country. This is the last stage for HS kids to actually be “kids” and to have the support of family and administration and to send these kids off into the real world with them knowing that they’re prepared is a great thing. I only wish more urban-based schools had this agenda. I did not attend CHS went to a city school in Dayton so I know WITH I’m talking about but rather than share petty jealousies why not recognize what a great community Centerville is? Has nothing to do with a vast amount of wealth there, as there is to a small degree, but more to a community that gives back in knowledge and support.

A wondeful event,to honor a true hero. This will be the 43rd time that this event has been held to honor, and remember Sonny Unger,a man that we all wish we were a little more like. What gets forgotten in this message especially to folks like WEEB,is that it is not about Centerville ,it’s about something greater than any high school or sport ,but Sonny loved Centerville and he loved football.Look around at this years event and see how many area leaders, coaches, and businessman who attend this event. It goes beyond Elk pride. When a community takes pride in their school’s athletics , their, leaders and their history than their should be venues where that can be displayed without prejudice. In my opinion , not being from Centerville, this is their opportunity. If there is to much black and gold for you maybe you should go to your community leaders and create your own “self important event”

Hey WEEB, Perhaps you should drive to Washington DC and find Sonny’s name on the Vietnam Memorial Wall. Maybe then you will understand…well then, maybe not?
