Thurgood Marshall wins D-II regional title with 74-59 win against Roger Bacon

KETTERING — Jordan Watson scored 32 points as the Thurgood Marshall boys basketball team used a 15-0 run spanning the third and fourth quarters to take control and win a Division II regional final 74-59 against Roger Bacon on Saturday at Trent Arena.

Marshall (21-5) will play either Rocky River or Toledo Rogers in a state semifinal at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus. The Cougars are returning to the state semifinals for the second time in three seasons, as they lost the 2009 state championship game. The school won the 1990 state title (as Colonel White).

Edmond Early Jr. added 15 points for Marshall, and Joe Thomasson (12 points) and Mark Alstork (10) also scored in double figures.

After Roger Bacon took a 41-40 lead with 3:24 left in the third quarter, Marshall went on a 15-0 run to go up 55-41 with 7:11 left in the game. Roger Bacon then got its first points in 4:33 with a Jabrial Coaston layup with 6:51 left.

But Marshall stayed in control throughout the fourth quarter. Roger Bacon got its closest within nine points (the last at 59-50 with 3:27 left), but the Cougars used pressure and quick transition to score or make foul shots for the remainder.

Roger Bacon finishes the season 20-6.

Third quarter: Marshall leads 51-41. Marshall pushed ahead by a game-high six points (37-31) with 6:48 left before Roger Bacon scored six straight points on free throws (with the help of a Marshall technical foul). Roger Bacon took the lead briefly at 41-40 with 3:24 left, but Marshall then used a 11-0 run to end the quarter. Sophomore guard Edmond Early led Marshall with seven points in the quarter (he has nine in the game). Jordan Watson has 20 points to lead Marshall in the game.

Halftime: Marshall leads 34-31. During the fast-paced second quarter, the lead changed three times and the score was tied three more times. Jordan Watson, the Marshall senior guard, has made five 3-pointers on his way to collecting a game-high 18 points. Those were part of seven Marshall 3-pointers in the half. Roger Bacon has gotten to the basket more with a mix of drives and deep passes to 6-8 Jared Bryant, who has eight points. Gavin Schumann, a 6-1 senior guard, leads the Spartans will 12 points off the bench. Both teams have led by as many as five points.

First quarter: Roger Bacon leads 16-11. Marshall scored the game’s first five points before Roger Bacon scored on six straight possessions. This is Roger Bacon’s biggest lead of the game, and they’ve gotten a team-high eight points off the bench from senior guard Gavin Schumann. Jordan Watson has seven points for Marshall.

PREGAME: Two unranked teams, Thurgood Marshall and Roger Bacon, will play for the Division II regional title at Trent Arena at 3 p.m.

Marshall (20-5) upset Dayton City League rival and top-ranked Dunbar 54-48 on Thursday night to reach the regional final for the second time in three seasons. Marshall won the 2009 regional title on the way to a state runner-up finish.

The Cougars won the 1990 state title (as Colonel White) and have lost to Dunbar twice, two out of state teams and Cincinnati Aiken this season.

Roger Bacon (20-5) is trying to make its first state appearance since winning the 2002 championship. The Spartans have also advanced in 1982 (another state title) following semifinal appearances in 1938 and ‘39.

Roger Bacon has improved from 5-16 in 2005-06 to go 59-15 in the past three seasons.

Hey Dunbar fan no need for all that. If we (city league) would learn to work together and not against each other what a wonderful world this would be. I don’t think your bad mishaps or ours should have ever been reported, but that’s how the media is… Don’t help them dear help us!
