Fairmont 59, Toledo Start 50; final
COLUMBUS - Fairmont defeated Toledo Start 59-50 in their Division I girls state basketball state semifinal Friday at OSU’s Schottenstein Center.
Fairmont advances to Saturday’s D-I state final at 8:30 p.m. against unbeaten Twinsburg (26-0), which advanced by eliminating Pickerington North 57-44 in Friday’s D-I semifinal nightcap.
Freshmen Makayla Waterman scored 21 points and Kathryn Westbeld added 17 in leading the Firebirds to another impressive performance. Chelsea Welch added 12 points.
All four of Saturday’s state titles will be contested by area teams: Fairmont (D-I), Carroll (D-II), Anna (D-III) and Fort Loramie (D-IV).
Twinsburg 57, Pickerington North 44: The Tigers bolted to a 12-point halftime lead and made it stand. Malika Howard, a 6-4 junior center, tallied a game-high 19 points, 13 rebounds and 5 blocks to personally dismantle North. Ashley Morrissette added 13 points.
North (21-6) was paced by Kavunaa Edwards’ 13 points and nine rebounds.
Anna 57, Fort Recovery 57-40: Carrie Watkins scored 16 points and Megan Fogt added 14 points and as many rebounds as the Rockets overcame a rugged start in the first game Friday. Anna hit 20 of 31 free throws to provide most of the difference.
Anna (26-1) has won 22 straight games. This means that two Shelby County teams - Anna and Fort Loramie - will play in Saturday’s state championships.
Kylie Kahlig led Fort Recovery with 13 points. The Indians (23-3) never found their 3-point touch, missing 15 of 17 launches.
Oak Hill 53, Elyria Catholic 49: Taylor Hale scored a game-high 17 points and top-ranked Oak Hill overcame a 13-point halftime deficit. Mikie Strite added 11 points for Oak Hill. The Oaks (25-0) will play Anna in Saturday’s D-III final at 5:15 p.m.
Ashley Schuster led Elyria (22-3) with 16 points and eight rebounds.
All of Friday”s winners advance to Saturday’s championships.
Carroll (D-II) and Fort Loramie (D-IV) both won their state semifinals on Thursday and will play in Saturday’s state finals. Carroll defeated previously unbeaten Clyde 47-43. Fort Loramie also handed Shadyside its first loss, 72-28.
Carroll (23-4) will play two-time defending state champion Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown (17-9) in the first of Saturday’s finals at 10:45 a.m.
That will be followed by Fort Loramie (22-5) vs. defending state champ Canal Winchester Harvest Prep (26-1) at 2 p.m.

Hey Marc, you’re right about two Shelby county teams playing for titles on Saturday. They are Anna and Ft. Loramie, not Anna and Ft. Recovery. Sounds like you got your Forts mixed up.
