Fairmont 55, Springboro 51: Panthers’ rewind
FAIRBORN - Springboro pushed Fairmont to the limit before falling in Friday’s girls high school basketball regional final at Wright State University, 55-51.
Jordan Trimarco led the Panthers with 13 points. Megan Graber added 11 and Olivia Schretzman 10. Boro ends the season at 23-3, losing only to Fairmont (25-1), Fairborn (21-3) and Indiana power North Central.
Here’s coach Tom Benjamin’s and Trimarco’s spin on the game, in which Alona Skipper sank 6 of 7 treys to led the Firebirds with 18 points:
Springboro coach Tom Benjamin: Our scouting report said make (Skipper) put it on the floor. They screened us and we didn’t respond very well. Give them credit, they got her the ball and she made the shots. You can stand out there unguarded where she was at and be fortunate to make 3 of 6.
That hurt: The one shot that they hit at halftime (a 3-pointer by Kelly Hart), that was brutal. I thought that we were fortunate to be only down by seven the way the second quarter went. I thought our kids did a great job of being gutsy. I’m not sure that didn’t take more out of us that maybe meets the eye. It looked like to me offensively we kind of lost focus.
Something missing: We had a couple chances and we went ahead a couple times, but we didn’t get any kind of a rhythm against their defense in the second half.
Say it ain’t so: If you would have told me that we were going to get 51 and not win, I would have taken 51 and thought that we’d be OK.
Good stuff: I think their program has become the best program in Dayton. I think everybody aspires to be in that position. We hope next year to come back and give them another shot. Both teams should be really good again next year, so, who knows?
It hurts. I thought that we had a good chance.
Springboro jr. Jordan Trimarco: Fairmont doesn’t give up 10-point leads a lot. I’m really proud of us getting back into it. But in the end they made the plays that they needed to and we didn’t.
On Skipper: I wasn’t expecting her to go 6 of 6. I knew coming into this that I was going to guard her and that I couldn’t get held up in screens. Even despite of getting held up in screens, I had my hand up in her face and she just had no problem shooting over it. It happens.
Could have been: I’m really proud of our team. Getting this far is a great accomplishment, but I just wish that we could have gone to state.
