Fairmont 55, Springboro 51: Panthers’ rewind
FAIRBORN - Springboro pushed Fairmont to the limit before falling in Friday’s girls high school basketball regional final at Wright State University, 55-51.
Jordan Trimarco led the Panthers with 13 points. Megan Graber added 11 and Olivia Schretzman 10. Boro ends the season at 23-3, losing only to Fairmont (25-1), Fairborn (21-3) and Indiana power North Central.
Here’s coach Tom Benjamin’s and Trimarco’s spin on the game, in which Alona Skipper sank 6 of 7 treys to led the Firebirds with 18 points:
Springboro coach Tom Benjamin: Our scouting report said make (Skipper) put it on the floor. They screened us and we didn’t respond very well. Give them credit, they got her the ball and she made the shots. You can stand out there unguarded where she was at and be fortunate to make 3 of 6.
That hurt: The one shot that they hit at halftime (a 3-pointer by Kelly Hart), that was brutal. I thought that we were fortunate to be only down by seven the way the second quarter went. I thought our kids did a great job of being gutsy. I’m not sure that didn’t take more out of us that maybe meets the eye. It looked like to me offensively we kind of lost focus.
Something missing: We had a couple chances and we went ahead a couple times, but we didn’t get any kind of a rhythm against their defense in the second half.
Say it ain’t so: If you would have told me that we were going to get 51 and not win, I would have taken 51 and thought that we’d be OK.
Good stuff: I think their program has become the best program in Dayton. I think everybody aspires to be in that position. We hope next year to come back and give them another shot. Both teams should be really good again next year, so, who knows?
It hurts. I thought that we had a good chance.
Springboro jr. Jordan Trimarco: Fairmont doesn’t give up 10-point leads a lot. I’m really proud of us getting back into it. But in the end they made the plays that they needed to and we didn’t.
On Skipper: I wasn’t expecting her to go 6 of 6. I knew coming into this that I was going to guard her and that I couldn’t get held up in screens. Even despite of getting held up in screens, I had my hand up in her face and she just had no problem shooting over it. It happens.
Could have been: I’m really proud of our team. Getting this far is a great accomplishment, but I just wish that we could have gone to state.

TweetCin. Winton Woods 80, Wayne 76; 2 OT’s, final
DAYTON - Travis Trice II tallied a staggering 38 points but too many turnovers and personal fouls were Wayne’s undoing in an 80-76 double-OT loss to Winton Woods in one of five D-I district finals on Saturday at UD Arena.
Wayne (22-2) seemed to be in command in the second OT, and led 72-68 after a Markus Crider dunk. But Winton Woods went on a game-ending 12-4 run to advance to their first regional since placing second in state in 2002.
Crider added 12 points for Wayne and Justin Hollins 10. Dennis Thomas had 25 points to lead Winton Woods (20-3) and Dion Dearmond added 23.
The high intensity and uptempo game turned into a foul-fest, with Wayne’s Trice, Justin Hollins and Keith Clements all fouling out. Winton Woods converted 35 of 43 free throws and Wayne 20 of 28. Wayne had a decisive 40-21 rebounding edge, but was undone with 25 turnovers.
Winton Woods plays Cincinnati La Salle at 8 p.m. Wednesday in a D-I regional semifinal at Xavier’s Cintas Center.
Cincinnati La Salle 60, Meadowdale 41: Brandon Neel tallied 18 points, Josh Lemons 13 and Trey Casey 12 to lead an impressive and emotional Lancers attack that knocked out the Lions (14-9).
La Salle (22-2) was playing without longtime coach Dan Fleming, who suffered a heart attack just last Monday. He has since had a stent procedure and is recovering, but not coaching.
Starting for the Lancers was Flemming’s son Ryan, who scored six points.
Dwayne Martin’s 12 points led the Lions.
Cin. Moeller 60, Trotwood-Madison 52: T-M (18-6) closed within 54-50 with just more than one minute left on a pair of Bam Bradley free throws. But Moeller (21-2) answered with six straight free throws.
Bradley unloaded his best effort of the season, scoring a team-high 16 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Jamar Hammond added 11 points.
Guard Charlie Byers led the Crusaders with 18 points and Josh Davenport added 17.
Cincinnati Withrow 80, Troy 70: The Trojans closed within four late in the fourth quarter until Withrow pulled away in the day’s opener. Lance Carter tallied a game-high 27 points to pace the Trojans (16-7) and Cody May added 20. Zach Martinez also added 10 points.
Aaron Thomas led Withrow’s balanced attack with 25 points and Devin Williams added 23. Withrow (18-5) plays Moeller (21-2) in the D-I regional semifinals at Xavier University’s Cintas Center at 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday.
Lakota East 48, Princeton 36: The Thunderhawks (23-1) are headed to the Columbus D-I regional after knocking off the GMC rival Vikings for the third time. It was the last of the five games Saturday.
R.J. Leppert led East with 15 points and Jalen Goodwin added 12. Malcolm Smith scored 10 points for Princeton (18-5).
