Andy Helms out as CJ football coach
DAYTON — Andy Helms is out as Chaminade Julienne High School’s football coach after five seasons.
The school announced on Wednesday that it was searching for a new head coach. Neither Helms nor athletic director Jon Payne addressed whether he was asked to resign or if it were a mutual decision.
Helms had the misfortune to follow Jim Place as the Eagles’ coach. Under Place, CJ football won the 2002 Division II state title and was a playoff regular.
Helms posted three winning seasons, including a best 8-3 in 2009. But his overall record was 29-22 and the Eagles were 0-1 in the playoffs. CJ was 4-6 last season and five of the losses were by seven points or less.
“We certainly do want to be more competitive in the (Greater Catholic League North Division) and make more regular appearances in the playoffs,” said Payne.
Helms is at least the third area football coach to resign. Longtime assistant Bob Levy was named to replace Steve Bartlett, who retired from coaching at Carroll after 16 seasons last fall. Also, Dan Cairns left Sidney after six seasons to become Parkway’s head coach last month. The Yellow Jackets position remains open.
CJ will take applications through Feb. 25 and hopes to name a head coach by the end of March.
Helms came to CJ after several successful seasons at East Clinton, where the Astros were playoff regulars. But that success never shifted to the Eagles.
Ironically, CJ’s greatest victory was Helms’ last game, a 13-6 upset of Alter that cost the Knights’ a top Division IV playoff seed. However, that was CJ’s only defeat of their GCL rival in Helms’ five games. The Knights outscored the Eagles a combined 158-63.
CJ was 2-3 vs. Carroll and 4-1 vs. Fenwick, its two other North Division foes.
“I’m sure that based on that rich tradition and expectations that we’ll get plenty of qualified candidates,” Payne said.
“I have a few names in mind and I’ve had a few names thrown at me.”
Helms was unavailable for comment. He is expected to remain at CJ as a full-time computer science teacher.

Helm’s could mot relate to the black athlete, that was his downfall. He was given a state team when he arrived at CJ but had no idea how to relate to inner city kids. I wish him well in his next coaching job. I believe he has learned a lot from this and will be a better coach in the future.

What? Helms’ stars were both black & white. He couldn’t deal with any of them. He was predictable and did not use his talented players as he should have. After getting humiliated in 2009 by Alter 56-7 he just left the stadium. No consolation for his seniors, nothing. Thank God CJ had a defense or they wouldn’t have won half the games they did in the last few years. Nobody will miss him jawing at the refs after every play and getting unsportsmanlike conduct penalties from the sidelines. He had the unfortunate task of trying to fill Jim Place’s shoes, and had no chance. He’s a nice guy (you know what they say about nice guys) and a great family man. He just was not the type of coach for the GCL and a tradition steeped program like CJ.

The rumors will start that Jim Place is going back to CJ, but don’t believe it. The CJ administration doesn’t want the best recruiter in Dayton prep football history anywhere near the building. Don’t think Placeman wants to come back either, at least as a head coach. Andy’s a country boy who should have stayed in the country.

Coach Helms remember what I told you last year when you only played the starters no back ups? “By putting young players on Special Teams it provides HOPE. By giving deserving players a Rotation it provides Patience. By being involved in Film sessions you get experience. Poor attitudes are often developed when Hope and Patience is lost. ATTITUDE IS A REFLECTION OF LEADERSHIP”. This year you had 24 seniors 20 with no varsity playing time. Imagine were you would be if you had 24 seniors with experience. Not to mention the several kids that gave up on you and transfered.I do wish the best for you and your family. But please learn from this experience.

What a wonderful quote about Hope and Patience and one that many coaches should be aware of when it comes to producing a winning program.

CJ is in a death spiral, their incoming Freshman class and Sophomore class are weak and Alter, Carroll, and Fenwick all have solid classes. They will struggle even if they hire Gruden. Place is not the answer Domsitz knows how to beat Jimmy. His only loss in 2002 was to Alter 36-7. They need Faust back!

There will be PRIDE and SUCCESS for the future of CJ Football. If you know of a student-athlete and (or) parent needing assistance with the recruiting process check with The Student-Athlete Resource Organization studentathleteresource.org

Place left after graduating kids to Penn State and Michican State and left a program at the TOP. PRIDE and SUCCESS starts with good athelets…. black and white. “If I was 45, I’d plan on working another 15 years,” Place continued. “But at my age, it’s just too much. My first job from now on is going to be grandfather.” He went 16-24 in his four years with Big Blue. You are longing for the past. He will only bring you the past. best of luck. your program is dead. your future is bleak. you may not beat alter again for a decade.

I think we have to just place facts where the are CJ has always put limits on kids. Even in the days of Ringer, when athletics are set up for certain kids then you are going to have a problem. Everyone is not an athlete so we as coaches have to quit putting friends and family ahead of athletics. This is going on right now in your bball program come you have an excellent group of young kids but you will play the friends and family game and look how the season is going. Now after years kids are seeing the problem. Alter has realized to let the horses go and just ride to the finish. Sorry just plain hard truth.
