Michael Bennett rewind: Warriors ‘were holding like crazy’
It’s never too late for a replay of Wayne’s 36-33 double-OT defeat of Centerville in the D-I football playoffs at Welcome Stadium last fall.
Elks senior lineman Michael Bennett is at San Antonio this week, practicing for Saturday’s U.S. Army All-American Bowl game at the Alamodome (noon, NBC). He gave us the scoop on how it’s going down there.
But we couldn’t help ourselves and also wanted his take on Wayne vs. Centerville-II.
That didn’t take much prodding.
In his words:
“They were holding like crazy. I could talk for hours about how we should have won that game. This is going to bug me forever.
“That was one of the best games that I’ve ever been a part of. It just showed how evenly matched the teams were, or how good (Wayne QB) Braxton (Miller) was.
“I think that we could have handled (Lakewood) St. Edward better (in the D-I state title game) since our defense was good. We would have been a better matchup defensively.”
On eventually joining Miller at OSU: “That’s a good feeling, knowing that my rival, who’s going to be my teammate, is very, very good. It’s just unfortunate that he was on the opposing team in high school for four years.”
Offense or defense? “From here on out it’s pure defense. With the guys that we have on offense, there’s not a place for me on the O-line. We average like 6-6, 315; it’s crazy.
“There’s some pretty good defensive tackles here, but I feel that I’m at the top out of most of the people here. This will either boost my confidence or show me what I need to work on for Ohio State.”
All-star practice: “It’s two practices daily. It’s full go and that’s what I like. I’m not saying that I’m doing perfect and not getting blocked, but I’m doing better than I expected.”
On not graduating early: “Obviously, it would be a good decision to get an early start on everybody. But I’ve always been pretty adamant about finishing out high school. Plus, I love track and I have an obligation to my team to score points for them.”
On OSU’s Suspended Six: “I think it’s really stupid. … Yeah, it’s a rule. They sold their bowl rings and I don’t think that they should be penalized for that. That’s their property. But you’ve got to follow the rules if that’s the rule.
“Five games is a long time for something like that. Kids get caught with illegal drugs and it’s 1-2 games. That’s not really showing what’s more important.”
On tattoos: “If I get a tattoo I want it to be something that I’ll be really proud of when I’m 80. I want tattoos, but it’s got to be something good.”

I guess his comments about Lakewood St. Edward are assuming they would have beaten St. X and Hilliard-Davidson with no problems.

Didn’t Wayne beat them twice this year and why is he still wining about it? People who look behind them have a problem facing the future. Your an OSU Buckeye now and welcome to the fratenity. Good Luck with your college career and playing with Braxton.

He is right about the holding. Braxton didn’t cross the goal line on that TD either. Oh well, on to next season.

“Wayne was holding me like crazy, we would have matched up better with St. Edwards.” Get the EFF outta here! Move on with your life, you havent even graduated from high school yet but you’re already that guy that reflects on his high school football career and what could have been. LAME!
