First since 1984: Miami Valley has D-I, D-II state semifinalists
The Dayton area has football state semifinalists in both divisions I and II for the first time since 1984.
Wayne (D-I) and Trotwood-Madison D-II both advanced with regional final wins over the weekend. Alter (D-IV) is the third Greater Dayton team that will play a state semifinal this weekend.
Wayne (10-3) will play Hilliard Davidson (13-0) at 7 p.m. Saturday at Welcome Stadium.
Trotwood (11-2) will play Uniontown Lake (10-3) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Gahanna Lincoln High School Stadium.
Alter (11-2) will play Columbus Bishop Hartley (11-2) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Alexander Stadium at Piqua High School.
But not since ‘84, when Centerville in Division I and Alter in Division II advanced to semifinals has the Miami Valley showed such bigger-school muscle. Here are the D-I and D-II semifinalists in Greater Dayton history:

Alter lost alot of respect getting owned like they did against centerville. Its clear this school sandbags in order to advance deep into the playoffs each year, earning big playoff dollars for the school. Even a jump back to D3 would return some of the respect Alter lost, but right now, no one cares about any division lower than 2, except for the fans of those small school teams.

I disagree 100%. I’m a fan of a D2 school and I love small school football. Especially the mighty MAC.

Fan, Alter played Centerville tougher than most of the GWOC teams. Alter destroyed Fairmont and has consistently done so. Look at last year? Alter beat Fairmont and then Fairmont beats Wayne. Does that make Alter better than Wayne? Probably not, but I hope it points out your stupid logic. Losing to Centerville in a year when their whole Defensive line is moving on to D-1 College Programs is nothing to be ashamed of. We have had our years like that as well. The only reason Centerville scheduled this game with Alter is because they knew Alter is rebuilding. Pretty convenient? In any of the previous 4 years Alter would have handled Centerville and Coach Ullery knows this. Alter and Wayne have had the most players move on to D-1 College programs in the last 5 years in this area. Division level has nothing to do with the quality of football. Each team is different.

Alter lost to Centerville and lost no respect with me. The OHSAA dictates what Div a school plays in. Schools have no control over that. Centerville did catch Alter the year after they lost a group of really good players. Intentional? Personally I don’t think so. KJ, you are right, divison level had nothing to do with quality of football. Until Eaton lost in the playoff’s their toughest game all year was against St. Henry’s, a Div V school. Trotwood is playing a team this week that did not play a Div II team until they got into the playoff’s, they played all Div I schools, I think. Football is football, you block, you tackle. Some just block and tackle better than others. Good luck to all our local teams this week…

in football as any sport, someone will win and someone will lose, it simply a matter of who imposes their will on the other and maintains it, in this case it happened to be Centerville, but who is still in the playoffs, thats the ultimate goal, state championship.great success to the local teams in the playoffs.

Arch Bishop Alter is the d IV playoffs for the 4th straight year. They have won the state title for the past 2 years. The have a legitimate chance to 3 peat. I do not beieve that this has EVER been accomplished before. Definitely NOT in DIV. Yet your newspaper barely covers them. Not one article this week featuring them. last week, kenton, whom Alter vanquished got mor ink ore game , than alter after the win!Whats up with this?

The Columbus dispatch has a good article regarding the State semi final game between Alter & Bishop Hartley. It’s a shame when you have to go out of town to get news about a local team.

I am heartened to read todays coverage. Not nearly as much detail as provided by the Columbus Dispatch, but definitely a step in the right direction.Good luck to all of the areas playoff teams. Multiple state titles would be awesome.
