Dement new West Carrollton AD

Rob Dement has been hired as the new athletic director West Carrollton High School replacing Jon Payne who resigned in October.

Dement is currently an assistant athletic director at Fairmont as well as the defensive coordinator for the football team. He officially takes over the position Dec. 19.

“I was happy at Fairmont, but athletic director spots don’t come open that often,” he said. “The timing just turned out to be right. The fall seasons were over. Winter sports are up and running.

“I can finish out my teaching duties at Fairmont in the mornings the next couple of weeks and be (at West Carrollton) in the afternoon to take care of business. And I don’t have to move.”

Dement currently teaches several math classes at Fairmont as well as administrative and coaching duties. At West Carrollton he will not coach or teach.

His biggest challenge will be finding a league for the school that has been an independent since 2005.

“Obviously, that is a priority,” he said. “I think there are some options we can explore.”

West Carrollton has been a member of several conferences over the years, including the Southwestern Buckeye League, Mid-Miami League, Miami Central Conference, Western Ohio League and Greater Miami Valley Conference.

The Pirates left leagues for various reasons, often looking for a better fit geographically or competitively.

West Carrollton was close to new affiliations the past couple of years. The Pirates most recently applied to the SWBL as part of a proposed two-team expansion with Tippecanoe. Member schools voted down the proposal.

Dement is a graduate of Springfield Shawnee and Wright State University. He began teaching and coaching at Georgetown, east of Cincinnati, where he was girls basketball coach for four years.

He then moved to Fairmont as teacher and assistant football coach for two years, went to Bellbrook as head girls basketball coach and assistant AD for two years and returned to Fairmont seven years ago.

Last year he was one of the finalists for the Fairmont AD job when Rick Robertson resigned to become head football coach at Springfield. The Fairmont job went to Brian Donoher.

Congrats to Coach Dement! It is a well-deserved opportunity for him. He is a good coach, one of many at Fairmont. Too many times people are looking for the negative even in a positive situation like this. Best of everything to Coach Dement and his family!!

Congratulations to Coach Dement.! I know he will excell at west carrolton. They are lucky to have him as their AD. He should have been the new AD at Fairmont but they passed on a great coach, teacher, and most of all a person! This makes it official, Donoher has his hands full as us Fairmont fans watch their athletics programs dwindle. Best of luck to Dement and good luck to Fairmont’s athletics because with him gone…well so are their sports teams!

Fairmont can have their bantom rooster back as far as WC is concerned. Other than getting us in the GWOC he has had no positive affect here. The 2009 football success by the coach he hired was due to a cake schedule but they came back to reality this year. The success by the boys basketball and softball is due to the coaches that have been there for years. The more we have gotten to know this guy the more there is not to like. He must of left his heart and compasion for the kids in Fairmont. On many occasions kids have been told their teams are not good due to a lack of talent while the adult AD and coach bear no responsibility. As a coach myself you do not tell kids they are no good even if that is the truth. We do not care where DeMent goes but we hope he does not stay here!
