Bridgeport makes pinwheels for peace
World peace, or “whirled peace.”
Bridgeport Elementary art teacher Ms. McFarland had her art students design pinwheels that represented what peace looked like to them. At 9:30 Tuesday morning, Sept. 21, the first through third grade students at Bridgeport gathered in the front of the building with their pinwheels and formed a giant peace symbol.
“A pinwheel is a childhood symbol - it reminds us of a time when things were simple, joyful, peaceful,” said principal Terri Fitton at morning announcements. “Pardon the pun—but this will be our quiet gesture of our wish for future ‘whirled’ peace.”
The event recognized the International Day of Peace (“Peace Day”), which provides “an opportunity for individuals, organizations and nations to create practical acts of peace on a shared date,” Fitton said.
It was established by a United Nations resolution in 1981 to coincide with the opening of the General Assembly. The first Peace Day was celebrated in September 1982.
By creating the International Day of Peace, the UN devoted itself to worldwide peace and encouraged all of mankind to work in cooperation for this goal.
“Peace Day should be devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples.”
“For us at Bridgeport Elementary, we should take this moment to recognize our Characeter Education traits of Acceptance and Compassion,” Fitton said. “We need to remember that peace cannot happen around us if we do not have peace within ourselves. We need to cooperate in harmony with each other. We need to care about the feelings of others. Let’s dedicate this day to peace in our school. Let’s have a “ceasefire” of hurtful comments and work together to peacefully solve disagreements.
“Let’s join the multitude of people around the globe today that are envisioning a common peace. The international peace bell will ring at the United Nations today and a moment of silence will follow,” Fitton read before ringing the Bridgport Peace Bell, which ushered in one minute of silence.
“During this moment of silence commit yourself to acting in a peaceful manner all day,” Fitton told the students. “Take a deep breath and let yourself feel the calmness of feeling accepted and cared for by your school community.”
