Badin student’s idea tops in bookmark contest

Badin High School sophomore Haley Fortuno has won a statewide energy conservation award.

Fortuno won a statewide conservation bookmark contest, beating out 250 other school champions in the process. Her bookmark had been chosen by her peers at Badin to be submitted to the contest, sponsored by the Ohio Energy Project.

She received a certificate and plaque at Ohio State’s Fawcett Center during a reception in mid-May.

Her bookmark involves the use of CFL lightbulbs, and the energy and cost savings they produce.

“The bookmark was well done and very informative,’’ said Badin science teacher Brian Streng, who spearheaded the project at Badin. “Haley is a very good student, and an artistically gifted student, as this bookmark shows.”

The bookmark will be mass produced and distributed throughout Ohio during the next school year.

Fortuno, of Fairfield Twp., is the daughter of Gerard and Amy Fortuno and a graduate of St. John the Baptist School in Cincinnati.

Linden Elementary teams up with Lindenwald Kiwanis for Student of the Month program

Linden Elementary, along with our business partners Lindenwald Kiwanis, has implemented a student of the month program. Staff members select students each month who have shown outstanding leadership in five areas: Respect, Personal Responsibility, Honesty, Compassion and Acceptance. These students are rewarded with a pizza party and a movie. Each student receives a t-shirt provided by the Lidnenwald Kiwanis and his or her name is also published in the monthly PTO newsletter. We are proud of our students at Linden Elementary.

Hamilton student heads to Brazil for Rotary Exchange

Hamilton High School sophomore Andy Judd has been brushing up on his Portuguese lately as he prepares to spend his junior year in Brazil as part of the Rotary Youth Exchange program.

Judd said he applied for the exchange as a way to learn more about himself and to test himself, but also to share his ideas and lifestyle with people in other countries.

“Brazil was actually my second pick,” he said, the first being Australia, “but I’m really happy I got Brazil.

“I’m very drawn to the music, and the weather is hot and sunny and really nice all year round. It’s like paradise.”

He will spend 10 months in the city of Belo Horizonte, the capital of the Brazilian state Minas Gerais in the southeastern part of Brazil, right above Sao Paolo. During his visit, he will stay with three different host families to get a well-rounded experience of life in Brazil.

“I’m looking forward to meeting different people and challenging myself to embrace things other than what I’m used to here,” he said.

He’ll be missing out on some of his favorite extracurricular activities, singing and dancing with Rhapsody in Blue show choir and serving on ASTRA, the community service organization, not to mention the summers he’s been spending as part of the Miami University Steel Drum Band.

But it will give him a chance to delve into his new favorite hobby, photography, and he’s hoping he’ll have the time to participate in a photo-a-day program, as well as writing in a journal, which is one of the requirements of the Rotary International program.

Youth Exchange began during the 1920s as an effort between a handful of Rotary clubs in the United States and Europe. After a hiatus during World War II, long-term academic exchange grew in popularity during the 1950s, and in the 1970s expanded to other countries, according to the Rotary Youth Exchange Handbook. Presently, more than 8,000 American Youth Exchange students travel abroad.

“It’s going to be a tough senior year to make up credits, but it’s going to be worth it,” Judd said.
