Pierce Elementary turns into Wonderland for Mad Hatter Tea Party

Students who met a reading challenge at Pierce Elementary School enjoyed a Mad Hatter Tea Party before embarking on spring break.
Donning brightly colored top-hats and sitting around tables decorated like clocks with centerpiece displays of tarts and chess pieces, about two dozen students sipped through red licorice straws and munched on fried chicken as a reward for a massive amount of reading.
Librarian Renee Smallwood provided the mad picnic for the students of Debbie Howard’s fifth class for having collectively read over 1 million words, but only those who personally read two books a week were invited. The other seats were filled by students from other classes who read the most words during the Accelerated Reading Contest.
There was a rabbit present as well, but he was quite on time. And although no one was stuffed into a teapot, Smallwood said she ended up in hot water with the teachers at Pierce because of all the reading going on.
“Some of the students were sitting in math class hiding books on their laps,” she said. “But I was very proud of the kids and the reading they did.”
Brynai Anderson led the pack with over 500,000 words. Katelyn Owens and Ronnie Bryant were also recognized as top readers in the class.
Smallwood said she chose the “Alice in Wonderland” theme because of the popularity of the Tim Burton movie. She bought copies of five different editions of the Lewis Carroll classic, including adaptations of the Disney animated cartoon, which she screened for students during the course of the contest.
The party was funded from money donated to the library from a previous reading contest won by fifth grader Brian Lampkin, sponsored by Miami University, Smallwood said.
