Science Olympiad winners

Over 650 eighth and ninth graders from Garfield and Wilson Junior High Schools and the Hamilton Freshman School entered the Science Olympiad held at the Hamilton Freshman School, Dec. 5.

Each student could enter up to three of the 22 events created by Hamilton City School teachers and run by teachers and volunteer students from Hamilton High School.

Winners received medals and the first place team in each event received $25 from Hamilton Rotary Club.

The following students placed in their events:

Balloon Float - Students calculate the mass needed to suspend a helium balloon in mid-air. 1st HFS - Logan Fox

2nd HFS - Emma Wilms

3rd Garfield - Logan Clark

Crack Up - 9th grade students construct an egg protection device from designated materials.

1st HFS - Rachel Root & Kaitlyn Roark

2nd HFS - Brandon Windhorst

3rd HFS - Anthony Crouch & Fallon Mohring

Bridge Building - 8th grade students design and build the lightest bridge made of wood,
capable of supporting a given load over a given span.

1st Wilson - Kaila Robinson & Stacy Clair

2nd Wilson - Josh Hoffman

3rd Wilson - Nathaniel Sorrell & Tyler Heinrec

Airlane Drop - 9th grade students create a glider that is dropped from a height and the distance traveled is measured.

1st HFS - Michael Rindler

2nd HFS - Jake Hyde

3rd HFS - Steven Beatty

Mission Possible - Students design and build a “Rube-Goldberg” type device of simple machines through which balls move and create energy transfers.

1st HFS - Siana Cecere & Savannah Howard

3rd HFS - Collin Rice & Randall Kinch

Mousetrap Car - Students construct a moustrap powered car to specifications in the rules.
The car which travels nearest to 10 m and reverses is the winner.

Mystery Architecture - Students build a structure that can be tested, given a supply of building materials. This year it was a car made with pasta, marshmallows and other materials.

Paper Planes - 8th grade students constructed 3 planes to test distance, flight time & accuracy.

Ramp It Up - 8th grade students create a ramp from paper and tape that will roll a ping pong ball for the longest time.

3rd Garfield - Mindy Wooten & Brittany Duncan

Robo-Billiards - Students design and build a single robot capable of placing standard
billiard balls into containers located at each corner of a square table.

Crime Busters - 9th grade students identify the perpetrator of a crime by using analysis of evidence found at the “crime scene”.

Rock Band - Students build two musical instruments, demonstrate their use, and play a pre-assigned song.

3rd Wilson - Conner Childs & Christopher Phillips

Surfing the Net - Students demonstrate skill and knowledge related to browsing the internet to find information.

Trivia Challenge - Pairs of students compete in a “Password” type trivia game.

Tower Building - 9th grade students design and build the lightest tower made of wood,
capable of supporting a given load.

Trajectory - Teams construct an elastic device capable of launching a ball into a pair of target areas.

Write It, Do It - One team member describes, on paper, an “object” constructed by the coach and the partner attempts to recreate it based on the description.

What are you trying to tell me? - Students analyze data tables, charts, graphs and maps.
