More than a year and a half later, Scott Blauvelt still wants his job back with the city of Hamilton. Blauvelt, occasionally referred to as the naked prosecutor, was fired in Sept. 2006 after surveillance video allegedly showed him walking through the Government Services Center naked.
Though, on June 25 just a week ago, a visiting judge ruled that Blauvelt is entitled to a civil service hearing on his termination. Read about it here.

In the negotiations between towing companies and the city, it’s becoming standing-room only.
When I sat in on a meeting last week, it was in a small room in the Police Department. There were representatives of the four towing companies and representatives of the city in the form of City Manager Mark Brandenburger, Police Chief Neil R. Ferdelman and Police Capt. Joe Murray.
On Tuesday, both sides brought out some more help for the meeting on the seventh floor of the city building. For the city, Law Director Hillary Stevenson, Vice Mayor Pat Moeller and FOP President Brian Robinson joined the fray. For the towing companies, attorney Kevin L Swick and Bob Day, father of Mike Day of Day’s Towing, sat in.
July is parks and recreation month. City Council made a proclamation of that at its meeting Wednesday, June 25, but the month is celebrated nationwide. Read about it here.

With cuts potentially in the future, City Manager Mark Brandenburger gave council members organizational charts for the Police, Fire and Parks departments.
Take a look at them here: organizational charts.pdf
Currently, the Police Department employs 125 sworn officers, 30 non-sworn civilians and 19 corrections officers. The Fire Department has 109 firefighters and the Parks Department has 11 full-time employees.
The Reds Community Fund began work this week fixing up a few ball fields around Hamilton. This is the second year in a row the fund has teamed up with the city.
In all, 10 fields will be renovated through the program.
City council on Wednesday officially nixed the idea of levying a kilowatt hour tax on its electric customers based on a percentage of their bill. Council voted 4-1-2 on the idea. Mayor Don Ryan, Councilwoman Carla Fiehrer, Councilman Archie Johnson and Councilman Jim Noonan voted against the motion. Vice Mayor Pat Moeller and councilwoman Kathy Becker thought the idea could be researched more. Councilman Ed Shelton thought it was a necessary evil.
The kilowatt hour tax was a better option than laying off police and fire officials, he argued. He also noted that companies like Duke Energy already levy the tax by the law.
“If you don’t do it this year, I guarantee you’re going to do it in 2010,” he said.
But the nays carried the day on the issue.
“Until we can prove we can control our costs, as a citizen, I wouldn’t vote for more taxes for anything,” Ryan said.
