Should city employees be required to live within the city?

Mandatory in-city residency has come up in conversations at City Council meetings as part of council’s discussions about employees who live outside the city and drive city-owned vehicles home.

Ohio law forbids cities from making mandatory residency requirements, but the Ohio Supreme Court will be hearing oral arguments on Jan. 20, 2009, in Lima vs. State of Ohio, a case that addresses the issue.

Hamilton City Law Director Hillary Stevenson is advising that the city await the Supreme Court’s decision on the case before any action is taken on the part of City Council.

I’m a teacher and a social worker…unemployed. In places I’ve worked there are more out of city and county workers than ever. Maybe that’s why I can’t find a job where I live. I believe the city should look at local residents first before hiring out of towners. I’m sure that I would never get hired in their cities. It seems that simple things are the hardest for people to understand.

Yes! I believe the city employee’s should live in the city limits. By requiring the employee’s to reside within city limits would show loyalty to that city. The employee’s city tax dollars will help support city services and fund thier own paycheck.

I can’t beleive the city is even thinking about workers having to live in the city limits. This happen to my father in 1960’s and caused my family to move from a nice home in Fairfield to Peck Addiction, with no utilties except electric. Outside toilets, and pumped water which the city refuse to maintain with roads and many other things the city gave the rest of Hamilton which had the humane treatment, we were not. Why cause the workers unnessicary stress of re-locating if they show up for work, what’s the problem.
