Red light cameras coming to Hamilton
City officials are entering contract negotiations with Redflex Traffic Systems to install red light cameras at various city intersections. The Scottsdale, Ariz. firm will be conducting a traffic study at 11 relatively dangerous intersections in the city. City Council will have a final say on whether or not to go forward with the cameras. Such systems have proven to reduce crashes, but there have been legal challenges in Ohio focused on their implementation and if they violate the state constitution by making traffic violations a civil matter and not criminal. Girard, a town near Youngstown, was ordered to stop using traffic enforcement cameras after a judge ruled that the program was unconstitutional. Another legal battle out of Toledo raised the issue that no police officer was present to witness the traffic violation. Below is the list of city intersections that are being considered where cameras could be installed.

These cameras as part of a safety program are OK but cities are using them as revenue generators. Making citizens pay fines based on these cameras’ photos is clearly unconstitutional. (amendments 5,6,7)By Truth

Idiots, this isn’t about safety, its about revenue. What these morons don’t know is no one likes a police state. Go look at Middletown. What happens is new residents don’t have an interest in buying homes, and buyers have no interest in retailer products, when they have to be hassled when driving to and from. This is a mistake. It makes your community be a police state, and it causes more harm than any good from the few $K you think you make by catching someone. Idiotic move by an idiotic county.By Frustrated

Revenue generator is RIGHT!!! I recently was tagged by the camera for easing into the crosswalk area to stop and get a better view for a turn. I came to a complete stop and there was no potential for danger to anyone. I even had a 2 police officers I know (non-Springfield of course)view the video to see if they would have ticketed me if they had been there in person and the answer……NO!!. I guess when you are driving in Springfield “THOU SHALT stop at the stop bar or you will be facing my same $100 fate”. Due to my profession I travel to Springfield quite often and have in the past spent a substantial amount of money to support local business. I hope they enjoy my hundo because I will be taking my business elsewhere.
