Dayton Public jumps to “continuous improvement”

Dayton Public Schools has jumped from “academic watch” to “continuous improvement” on the 2011 state report card, the district announced Monday.

Superintendent Lori Ward, who is heading into her second year, made the announcement during her annual convocation address, which was broadcast to the entire DPS staff.

The change — meaning the district moved from the equivalent of a D to a C on the annual report card — was achieved through the district’s value added rating, indicating students demonstrated more than a year’s growth for a year’s instruction.

“Our teachers and administrators are working together like never before, and we are beginning to see the results of a more focused use of data to shape instruction. We are entering the year with a new academic plan, a new unified curriculum, greater accountability and incremental gains that will move us closer to our goals for academic success,” Ward said.

The state report cards will be formally released by the Ohio Department of Education next week.

This is the first time since 2006 the district has been rated “continuous improvement.” It slipped back to academic watch the following year.

On Monday, the district said achievement increased across all subject areas, according to state reports analyzed by the DPS Office of Accountability.

The performance index, which measures the achievements of every tested student, also was up, from 72.6 last year to 75.9 in 2011; it is the highest performance index DPS has recorded since the report card was introduced.

The district’s graduation rate has risen from 69.7 percent in 2005 to 84.4 in 2011. Tenth-graders improved in all subject areas on the Ohio Graduation Test, and students in grades three through eight posted gains in 11 of 12 areas in math and reading.

Over the summer, DPS has adopted a new academic plan and has developed new curriculum guides to ensure that teachers and students are prepared for the rigors of the national common core standards Ohio will adopt in 2013-2014.
