So what’s up with vouchers?
I got a call last week from a confused parent. After reading in the DDN about Jon Husted’s plan to expand vouchers, she didn’t know what she should do now to try to put her child in a better position to receive one.
So let me try to go over where we are.
Children currently attending one of these schools — Belle Haven, Edison, Fairview, Hickorydale and McNary elementary schools or Dunbar or Belmont high schools — are eligible right now. Incoming kindergarteners who live near those schools might be eligible. Check with Dayton Public Schools to see if you are within the boundaries of an eligible school. Charter school kids living close to one of the elementaries listed also could be eligible. Again, check with DPS.
That’s as of right now. But pay attention if your would like state money to send your child to a private school but the child is currently in a charter school, already in private school, home schooled or living in a nearby low performing district like Trotwood or Jefferson Township.
Husted has made it clear that he wants more kids to be eligible for vouchers and has vowed to expand the program before summer. What happens next in the legislature is uncertain, but as the House speaker, Husted is powerful and there is a good chance the voucher program will be expanded.
So for those who are interested, here’s what you should do right now.
First, find the private school you might like for your child to attend and find out if they are going to participate in the voucher program. Schools have to let the state know this week.
Once you have found a school, apply and see if your child is accepted. If they are, then you’ll need the school’s help to make application to the state for the voucher.
Meanwhile keep an eye on the news, right here at Get on the Bus and in the DDN. By April, we should have a better idea of what the legislature is going to do and how eligibility might be expanded. Stay tuned.

The explanation/info you have shared is digestible and fair. Thanks for taking the time to break it down in order that more parents will be able to comprehend what an Ohio EdChoice Scholarship really is…right now! Much love, more prayer - Daria Dillard Stone
