Flyers end losing streak at Fordham
Good-bye, losing streak.
Dayton shook off a four-game skid by rallying for a 72-70 overtime win against Fordham at noisy Rose Hill Gym today.
Trailing by four with 2:22 to go in regulation, the Flyers (15-9, 5-5 Atlantic 10) cut it to two on a Chris Johnson put-back and then tied it on a drive by Kevin Dillard with 19.3 seconds left. Fordham called timeout with 13.6 seconds to go, but Devon McMillan’s leaner missed at the buzzer.
Luke Fabrizus gave UD a two-point lead in the OT by converting a one-and-one with 2:28 left.
Josh Parker was hacked on a rebound and made two foul shots at 1:01 for a four-point bulge.
The Rams picked up a pair of free throws, blocked a Kevin Dillard drive and had 20 seconds to try to tie or win the game.
Guard Branden Frazier missed a drive, and Johnson skied for the rebound, but he somersaulted over a teammate and was called with traveling with 3.5 seconds to go.
The Rams, though, threw away the in-bounds pass, and Josh Parker picked up the loose ball and dribbled out the clock.
Falling behind 49-45 with 11:40 to go, the Flyers ripped off seven points in a row, five of them from Parker. His 3-pointer with 7:30 left gave UD a 52-49 lead, its biggest in regulation.
Fordham (9-14, 2-8) nudged ahead 58-55 with 4:30 left on a deep 3-pointer by freshman guard Bryan Smith, the current A-10 rookie of the week.
The Rams grabbed a four-point lead with 2:22 to go on another 3-pointer by Smith. Johnson had his fourth double-double of the season with 22 points 13 rebounds for the Flyers, who started 1-of-15 from the field and trailed by as many as 11 in the first half. Parker had 14.
The Rams’ Chris Gaston scored 15 of his23 points in the first half. He’s the only player in the league averaging a double-double (16.1 points and 10.2 rebounds). He finished with eight boards.

Thank God for made free throws! Rams killed on offensive boards, Luke is just terrible under boards, that should have been his board KJ flew for, he was flat footed and was not ready. Kav was Huelsman all over again missing two foot bunnies. All the negative aside they deserve all the credit in the world a road win is always sweet.

I’d like to point out to RudyFlyer and Slag that Fordham starts 2 freshman guards, as well as a soph, junior, and only one senior. While not impressive, a conference road win for the flyers is welcomed right now no matter who it is against. They could have folded after going down 11-2 to start the game, but they didn’t. CJ and JP were outstanding, but don’t overlook the job that MK did in shutting down Gaston for the last 10 minutes of the game.

The Dayton Flyers basketball team has a great pair of studs coming in 2012 … Devon Scott and Jalin Robinson both of the #1 ranked Div I HS Team in the State of Ohio .. Columbus Northland HS . The future is looking awesome for the Flyers .

Random thoughts —- Agreed we were saved by free throws. — Still living and dying on the 3 point and we are in deep freeze there.— Need to work on pounding inside more and forcing more fouls. - PW has no confidence right now, he was wide open quite a few times on the perimeter and wouldnt shoot.— I give a lot of credit to KD at point gaurd, but maybe put in Josh Parker for more playing time. It gives a different look that the other team has to figure out. With KD in for the “whole” game the other team begins to “learn” him and make adjustments, mixing it up could be a plus. - We were fortunate on this one, we escaped with the win. There were 2 bad calls at the end of the game. CJ with the traveling call could have gone any direction and then the plain as day soccer kick by MK, should have been a call and Fordam gets the back at about 2 second on the clock. - Anyhoo I’ll take the win. -Keep working hard guys.

The flyers were very fortunate that Fordham forgot that they had Gaston in the second half. There were many times in the second half that I was astonished to see Gaston’s man leave him wide open to double up on someone else. I couldn’t believe that Archie, during halftime, didn’t tell whomever is guarding Gaston to get in his hip pocket and don’t leave him for any reason. Deny him the ball. I guess that’s why Archie makes the big bucks and I don’t.

I was at Fordham…the game had every bit of drama Coach Archie could handle…Pushing his troops, yelling , finessing, ordering and urging this team to aVictory…Chris Johnson is ‘The Warrior’ I hope he’s ok after a horrible fall after rebounding with 3 seconds left under the Rams Backboard…We stole one on the road…Mrs. Archie Miller was at the game and can she Cheer for the Flyers…Awesome Baby!!

@FF65-what’s your point? Fordham has less talent? They are actually more talented than the Flyers and that speaks volumes about this UD team. Yes, it was a good win for a team that relies on Dillard and Chris Johson to make plays for them. And they did today. Parker also played well but Kav and Fabrizius played liked crap. Kav misses Benson because with Benson he could be the second big man and not the primary and only big man under the boards that he is now. Chris Johnson made one of the most amazing athletic moves to keep him from landing on his head and being seriously injured. I was totally amazed. One of the most amazing and most frustrating players I have seen in a UD uniform in quite some time. I’ll miss watching him play next year.

We will take any road win! Great job of not falling apart in OT.Games are won and lost at the FT line and the Flyers did a nice job today. Hopefully this will get the team going and put together a nice little run. Go FLYERS!!!

RudyFlyer, my point was that not too long ago Slag was blogging about how there were no other teams that were as inexperienced as the Flyers. I believe that you agreed with that. I replied that Kentucky, the #1 team in the country, had 3 freshman starters. You got on my case because I used them as an example, so I’m simply pointing out that Fordham is just another team that has less experienced players than UD. I probably should have kept my mouth shut. Let’s just drop the whole thing okay. I won’t mention it anymore.

My bud 65 one day you will figure out experience does not mean sh** UD starts 3 seniors and 2 juniors its all about talent they have been out “talented” in almost every game

I have to agree with FaithfulFlyer65 many teams are playing young kids.So I think flyer fans need to stop using that as an excuse.Look at Kentucky and Ohio State every year they always lose kids to the NBA so stop whining about the youth.Dayton will always be a mediocre program.Get over it!

My bud 312, that’s exactly the point that I was making to RudyFlyer and Slag. That lack of experience is not an excuse because there are good teams out there who have even less experience than UD.

Starting 3 seniors and 2 juniors from a team that didn’t make the tournament last year is not a good thing. Need to recruit better.

So even if UD goes to the NIT just what lil “t” be doing other than getting therapy to try and make himself feel more important. Some people live for others adversity to make themselves feel superior.

Faithful, You’re correct that you should have shut your mouth. When you start blabbing about UD with the likes of OSU and KY recruiting and their top 20 kids then you lose every fabric of credibility you might have ever had. Every road game is tough especially when the team going there has zero confidence. You, obviously, never played a port beyond the ones they serve Kool aid and cookies to after the game. UD has glaring weaknesses and have 4 players in an 8-9 rotation that never played a lick last year because they lack any of the needed qualities to play defense, that same thing killing this team now. Now wat can’t you interpret about that? Florida State loses on the road last week to Boston College who is worse than Fordham and FSU beat BC earlier in the year by 32. Think FSU doesn’t wish they pulled out a game like the Flyers and beat BC by 2 points? Winning on the road is incredibly hard. Is Northwestern better than OSU because they beat Michigan State who dominated OSU last night at OSU? You simply cannot be this incredulous and incredibly naive. UD is not a good team and as surpassed expectations by miles.

Talent, no matter how young, trumps mediocre “talent with experience” every time. Freshmen at UK have been playing high level AAU ball against the most talent players in the country before they even get to college. Miller is earning his salary (and learning his trade) this year by winning more than half the time against teams either with more talent or more bodies.

Time to cool down Slag. We have different opinions on some things, and that happens. If you check what I said in my first blog above at 4:47 PM yesterday, I said that a conference road win is always welcomed. And yes, KU may have more talented freshman, but they those freshman are leading them to a #1 ranking in the country, which shows that players with little or no college experience have the ability to do that. UD may have lesser talent, but they also play a much easier schedule and obviously have not earned any ranking. I’m not against UD. I’m a big fan of the team and of AM. I’m just stating some facts.

Nice to see RH getting more playing time. He’s more athletic than LF and plays better defense. He needs to get more involved in the offense. He’s got a decent outside shot but he doesn’t appear confident. Flyers still make too many meaningless passes instead of getting the ball in the post or driving to the basket.

Faithful, The players at KY regardless of class are thoroughbreds compared to the kids at UD. Not only that but the KY freshman are as experienced as MK, Hill, and the French kid right off the bat. These players would be walk-ons at KY. Add in Luke and that’s 4 KY walk-ons. None of those kids even mentioned above, outside of Luke even just a few minutes per game because he was the best shooter on one of the worst shooting teams in the country last year, played a lick last year on barely a top 60 team because they are absolutely atrocious defensive players. Archie Miller , because of 9 scholarship players with one out for most of the year, is asking these same unathletic, awful defensive kids to play almost 30 mpg. What that means is they are getting totally exposed. I predicted UD would win 8-10 games this year, maybe, and they might win 18-20 including A10 tourney which should darn near give him the COTY award.

Okay Slag, I hear you you. I predicted this team would win 17 games this year and that was before they lost Benson, so I’d say they are doing rather well. Remember, they won at Temple, beat X, St. Louis and Alabama at home, and Minnesota on a neutral floor—so there is some talent there.

Hurray for Chris Johnson! He showed what a real baketball player with real athletic ability can do. Hats off to Dillard! Kavanaugh, like Huelsmann, looks like a throw back from the ‘50’s. He has no athleticism at all. Where and why does UD recruit this type of athlete?

@FF65 - you constantly “hear” but never really get it. I predict you will repeat all of this experience should beat young talent when the Flyers lose to another team you believe they should handle easily. The Flyers will be lucky to win 2 of the next 6 games

I don’t really understand what you’re trying to say johnbrisker, but it seems opposite of the point I was trying to make. However, if they win only 2 more games that would make the prediction I made before the season began that they would win 17 games this season pretty good wouldn’t it?
