Miller makes addition to staff

Dayton basketball coach Archie Miller has hired his first assistant. He’s Kevin Kuwik, who has been on Ohio State’s staff as video coordinator for the last two years.

Before that, the 36-year-old Kuwik was director of basketball operations for Butler and spent seven years as an assistant at Ohio U. under Tim O’Shea.

The Notre Dame grad has a military background, having done one tour of duty in Iraq as part of the Indiana National Guard.

“I’m obviously very, very excited to add him to our staff,” Miller said. “He’s an important component. He’s got great character. And the other thing I’m excited about is his track record. If you look at who he’s worked for — like Thad Matta (at Ohio State) and Brad Stevens (at Butler) — he did a terrific job for all of them and got glowing reviews.”

Kuwik told the Columbus Dispatch he is looking forward to returning to a role as recruiter and on-court coach.

Leaving Ohio State “with who we have coming back, and the family program we have as far as the staff and players, that’s not something easily done,” he told The Dispatch.

“The best thing about it, though, is at the end of the day, coach Matta is truly looking out for what’s best for me, and the next step is for me to get back on the road and recruit. My goal remains to be a head coach.

“It’s a great challenge going to Dayton, obviously. I’m sad to leave Ohio State but excited about the challenge. I really think (Dayton) is a sleeping giant. They’ve been really good, and I think there’s even a little more we can get out of it. I evaluate every job as far as recruiting, and in the (Atlantic) 10, Dayton is right there. It has great resources, a great administration and great support.”

I don’t doubt the man’s character given what he has experienced. However, he went from an asst coach position to DOBO & video coordinator. While they were at higher level programs, I don’t believ they involved coaching NOR recruiting. UD could use a proven recruiter on staff.

I love it that he has been with OSU and Butler. That is a great sign that he has been at two big time programs.

@MB - you may want to read the following article before criticizing Mr. Kuwik. This is a man who has faced amazing adversity in the middle of his coaching career. There is a reason he stepped back from his assistant position. Read, before you speak. http://es.pn/hc6xNp

Looks like we may need a translator so we can understand what the new coach is talking about. “Bag That”

Why can’t everyone just please understand that Dayton is at best a second tier program and that at best you get second rate coaches. Dream all you want, but one NCAA tournament win in 20 years shows the true state of the program.

In the BCS world, second tier or mid major doesn’t mean second rate. Dayton is not a second rate program by any stretch and people who make those analogies are simply idiots. Archie Miller continues to say the right things and this seems like a good hire. A young coach with bigger aspirations is a good thing.

314 re -read my comment. His reasons for doing what he did professionally are understandable.nevertheless it doesn’t change the fact that he hasn’t been in a coaching/recruiting position the past 3 years. He may be an excellent hire, but I stand by comment that UD needs a proven recruiter beyond Miller himself. A Gene Keady addition ala St. Johns wouldn’t hurt either.

I’m with MB. Hopefully Archie is not going to build another staff like BG- all inexperienced guys who won’t be in a position to question him and his game strategy. Some of his more recent comments are sounding a bit Napoleonic and we’ve had our share of little Napoleons (one) for this century.

booby, I mean bobby: If you really believe what you wrote in your blog, then why bother writing anything? I think you know good things are coming and you are just can’t stand to see good things at UD. Now that I do understand.

COngrats to Coach K. I have personally known coach since he recruited my son. As a long time UD fan (don donoher camps vet pre Arena)I can tell you that I am ecstatic to see Kevin get this job. He is a top notch recruiter that closes deals and gets kids polished up academically. A master game planner and scout his place on this staff is paramount to a first year head coach who needs someone who can break down film and have the cajones to stand up and say when something he sees will work in exploiting an opponents weakness. Congrats Kev. COuld not happen to a nicer guy and you bet I will be in the Arena come season.

Nice pick up Archie. Kuwik was one of the “up and comers” that Vitale named in a recent article in College Hoops magazine as one of the new bloods to keep an eye on coming out of big time programs. He has a great pedigree and had awesome mentors to learn the game from. Let’s face it - - nobody knew who Shaka was 2 years ago either!
