Raterman recovering after ACL surgery
Justine Raterman, a first-team All-Atlantic 10 selection for the University of Dayton women’s basketball team, has undergone successul knee surgery last week to repair her anterior cruciate ligament.
She was injured during the A-10 tournament but kept playing anyway, helping the Flyers to their second straight NCAA tourney berth.
Here’s more on Raterman from the UD press release:
Justine Raterman underwent a successful knee surgery performed by orthopedic surgeon and UD team physician, Dr. James Klosterman on Friday, March 25, in which he repaired her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) with a hamstring graft.
“Justine is doing great. She has been doing rehab six days a week doing simple quad strengthening exercises and focusing on getting her full range of motion back,” said UD women’s basketball Athletic Trainer Jaime Potter, ATC, LAT. “She saw Dr. Klosterman yesterday (April 5) for her follow up appointment and he took her stitches out and gave her the ok to start walking without her crutches.
“She is progressing very well. She is already back in the weight room with (strength coach Mike) Bewley doing upper body workouts,” added Potter. “Justine is a great kid and athlete. She is going to work as hard as she can and do whatever Mike and I tell her to do to get back to where she needs to be.”
The junior tore her ACL in the first half of the Flyers’ Atlantic 10 semifinal 75-67 win over Temple on March 6. A co-captain, Raterman started against No. 5 Xavier in the championship game, Dayton’s first-ever trip to the conference final. She started and scored a team-high 19 points. Her gritty performance in that ESPN nationally-televised game was mentioned by Michael Smith on ESPN’s Around the Horn.
Raterman played in UD’s NCAA First Round 75-66 loss against Penn State on March 19. She scored three points and had a team-high six rebounds. ESPN commentator Debbie Antonelli took notice and named Raterman one of her top five players from the 2011 NCAA Tournament because of her inspirational play in that game.
Raterman, a 2010-11 First Team Atlantic 10 selection, averaged a team-high 16.1 points per game and 7.3 rebounds per game this season. She finished the year ranked in the top 10 in the A-10 in many categories including: fifth in scoring, seventh in rebounding, second in field goal percentage (.544), fourth in free throw percentage (.842), and fourth in three-point field goal percentage (.419).

Hopefully she makes a full recovery and is able to follow the timeline at www.aclsurgeryrecovery.net so that she can make it back for next season.
