A-10 works out deal with ESPN

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Atlantic 10 Conference and ESPN agreed to a two-year television contract extension to televise both men’s and women’s basketball games through 2012-13.

The A-10 will make at least 32 appearances in each of the next two seasons across ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU. The agreement also includes a live telecast of the women’s championship finals in 2012 and 2013.

During the 2010-11 season, A-10 men’s and women’s basketball made 56 total appearances on ESPN’s networks.

Schools appearing in the broadcasts have yet to be determined.

“We are extremely pleased to have an outstanding partnership with ESPN,” league commissioner Bernadette McGlade said in a statement. “The exposure, quality of the telecasts and national reach of ESPN and its networks is invaluable to A-10 Basketball and the league.”

Daugherty leaving women’s b-ball program

The Dayton women’s basketball program lost a solid player when sophomore Kari Daugherty announced she was leaving the program. Here’s the more on the transfer from a UD press release:

“We were fortunate to have Kari in our program. She has a promising career ahead of her,” said coach Jim Jabir. “She wanted to be closer to home and this was a personal decision for Kari. We wish her the best.”

Kari Daugherty put up 389 points during her two seasons, averaging 6.0 points and 16.0 minutes per game. She was named to the Atlantic 10 all-rookie team her freshman season. This year, she was named CoSIDA second team academic all-district. She is the younger sister of Kristin Daugherty who finished her career this season as UD’s fifth all-time leading scorer.

“It was a very hard decision but I feel like it was the best decision for me,” said Kari Daugherty. “I’m looking at Ashland University right now.”

The Flyers are coming off back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances. Dayton finished as runner-up in the Atlantic 10 tourney and had a 21-12 record this season.
