Miller reflects on Dayton game

Xavier coach Sean Miller, whose team dropped a 71-58 decision at Dayton last Wednesday, had some gracious remarks about the Flyers and injured point guard Rob Lowery on the Atlantic 10 coaches teleconference Monday.

“We played in the highest-level type of environment at UD Arena last week and ran into what I think is a terrific basketball team in Dayton,” he said. “I can’t say enough good things about what Brian Gregory and his staff have done with that team. They play a defensive-oriented style and get the most out of that team.

“I felt bad Rob Lowery went down in our game. Watching the season they’ve had, you never want (to lose) a key component, and he certainly was playing very well for them. I feel bad that happen. I guess we all can then say that’s part of a long college basketball season, but those are the ‘uncontrollables’ that can drive everyone crazy.”

Miller is dealing with that to a lesser degree with freshman center Kenny Frease, who sat out a lopsided win over Fordham on Saturday with a lingering ankle injury.

“An ankle sprain at 6-11, 270 pounds, I think you just want to keep one eye on it,” Miller said.

“He wanted to play against Dayton. He helped us a little bit (four points in 13 minutes). But clearly, you could tell he was bothered. … I think every day he gets better. We just were trying to protect him this weekend without beating him up for no reason.”

Sean Miller exudes class. Make no mistake about it…he wanted a win here in the worst way, but that’s part of what makes him one of the top coaches in the country. When he went through the congrats line at the end of the game, he had a word or two for each UD player. There’s nothing quite like a win over Xavier…particularly since they have been far and few between lately. UD and X have such a close connection. As has been noted: we recruit the same players more often than naught, we have the historical rivalry, and the proximity of the universities has lead to friendships between the players. It will be a war on March 5. The game may very well be crucial in deciding the regular season A10 champion. Go Flyers. Just win the next game.

Kenny Frease is a thug, not a basketball player. I watched the XU - Temple game where he cheap shoted a guy when running down the court throwing an elbow to a non moving unsuspecting player. In the UD game he threw elbows, pushed, and bulled his way around the court like a football lineman. Basketball wasn’t meant to be a contact sport. Not to mention he throws his elbows up on his moving screens. This guy shouldn’t even be on the court, but rather on a rugby team. And the refs just let him get away with it just like they did in the Temple game where he was caught blatantly and red handed drilling a guy at mid court with an elbow for no reason. Typical Cincinnatti area thug-ball.

Hey Stone, I’m sure you wore a dress when you played. Get over it. He is an inside big man!! His job is to be physical and if he sends a message or two during the course of a game…so be it. I would rather have an intimidator on the floor instead of a pansy any day of the week.

Physical was the Uconn-Pitt game. The game was expected to be physical down low and it was. Blair flipped 7-3 Hasheem Thabeet over his back in the first half, like an arm bar takedown, sending him to the bench for about 4 minutes. Blair got a dose back in the second half when took an elbow to the face and had to sit out for a while. No fouls called either.

Miller is a punk and always has been. Great pic on the DDN site where the ref is basically holding down an “exploding” Miller. He was schooled by the best whiner there ever was, Baby Matta. xavier dave, too funny, let me know when you beat a Horizon League member…at home.

The biggest problem I had is that Xavier disrespected Dayton after the game by not staying around for the award presentations. Every year I can remember the Dayton team always stayed on the court after the game, after their loses and respected Xavier during their award presentations.

bobs,cj….you both are douche bags. The only whining going on is that lamentable fact that the Horizon is a one team league. Period, end of story. Miller a whiner?? Ha,Ha,Ha,Ha…that’s a good one! You are Idiots!!!
