Lowery has surgery for tendon tear

Dayton junior point guard Rob Lowery had surgery this afternoon for a torn patellar tendon in his right knee, ending his season with the Flyers.

“The good news for Rob is there was no other structural damage,” coach Brian Gregory said. “You worry about other things going wrong in there as well, and right now, it just looks like the patellar tendon.”

Lowery, who will need about five to six months of rehab before returning to the court, is third on the team in scoring with a 7.7 average and second in assists at 3.4 per game. He was named to the all-tournament team at the Chicago Invitational Challenge after leading the Flyers to a win over Marquette.

He made a 3-pointer against Xavier but was injured when he fell awkwardly on a drive to the basket with 9:46 left in the first half.

“He’s been such good part of this team,” Gregory said. “He’s been an absolute pleasure to have in this program since coming from a junior-college. He’s done a great job adjusting to this level of basketball also with the responsibilities as a young man and a player.”

“Any time you lose a player on your team who has worked extremely hard, it’s disappointing. But you’ve got to have a strong faith and strong believe that somehow, someway — you may not understand things — that it would work out best for the young man and for our program.”

i think i speak for everyone when i say best of luck with the recovery RL. You have been a tremendous part of this team’s success in the 22-3 start, and your presence will be missed. Hopefully ST continues to show the poise, maturity and leadership he did last night in attempting to fill some very large shoes. I just hope RL’s recovery goes well and he will be ready to return to action next season.

I agree. Rob you were a very important part to this team, you still are but you will be missed. Your intensity was amazing and without you UD wouldn’t have the record they have.

It was tough to watch Rob go down after being such a key part of the team this year. I’m sure the toughness we saw on the court will extend to getting ready for next year. And, what a classy move by Chris to post his best wishes here. I’m a class of ‘68 grad and I can say that this is already one of the great Dayton Flyers teams, no matter what their record ends up being. Go Flyers!!

Rob…Your contributions to this team have not stopped, only changed. You are a huge reason for the team’s success regardless of the role. You are one of the leaders of this team whether you play or not. I will miss your play on the court but am confident you will contribute and in your teammates to get the job done with your support and leadership. The Flyer nation is 110% behind you!! Wishing you a speedy and complete recovery and God bless you, your family and the Flyers!! We are proud of your accomplishments and for what is yet to come!! Go Flyers!!

Rob, Flyer Nation is with you and you are in our thoughts and prayers . I did not know much about knee patellar tendon tears, now I have the sites noted on my computer, and I know more than I ever wanted to know. If what I read is correct, you showed a lot of guts hanging around during the game. Lean on your team when you need that extra strength, and Quick recovery to ya! RLs loss will have an impact as the Safety net is now in use. However In watching Rob and the team play this year with concern and energy I have a feeling 2 things will surly happen. 1) The team will provide a great boost to Rob in his recovery in ways you can imagine. 2) Rob will also provide insights, support, and encouragement to ST in his more extended role, plus ,needeless to say, the inspiration to the team for the remainder of the year! Go Flyers
