Flyers upset Xavier, 71-58

Chris Wright had 19 points and six rebounds and Marcus Johnson had 13 points to lead Dayton to a 71-58 upset of 14th-ranked Xavier on Wednesday

The Flyers (22-3, 8-2 Atlantic 10) never trailed in the game and turned a two-point lead early in the second half into a 12-point advantage with 10:55 to go. The Musketeers (20-4, 8-2) cut the deficit to seven with 7:30 to go but could get no closer.

Derrick Brown led Xavier with 17 points.

The UD win snaps a six-game losing streak to Xavier.

Boy was I wrong, UD played great!!! I am glad I misjudged how UD would play. Great team win, they were aggressive, tough, and hit key shots. Hope they keep it up.

Watched the game from Fla. on ESPN Classic. The Flyers were tough! My stars of the game were Thomas,Perry, and Searcy. Now do you critics see why the Flyers use so many players?

I truly wish what you said was true. People in NYC equate UD basketball with the likes of Akron, Toledo, Miami and Bowling Green. Few truly know or comprehend the true love affair that exists in the Gem city and the special nature of our program. Despite all that this was and will remain a great win.

I guess they’ll see each other in the A-10 Tourney. Automatic bid for one of them. At-large bid for the other.

Congratulations Dayton Flyers and Coach Gregory. You showed what you can do when you put your mind to it. Protected the ball and a total team effort on offense and defense. HOWEVER, enjoy this win tonight, but in the morning focus on Richmond. If you don’t beat them on Saturday, the win against Xavier won’t mean a lot. Don’t let up now Flyers!

A good win, but the loss on Sunday may hurt UD’s chances for the NCAA tourney. They need to win the A-10 tourney or at least finish second. An early exit could put them in the NIT.

An important win, but what’s all the blog talk about Dayton and Xavier meeting again in the A-10 tourney? In case not every knows it, they play again at Xavier before the A-10 tourney even begins, and Xavier will surely be looking for some pay back. Enjoy this win for now, but there’s a lot left to accomplish before the A-10 tourney. Starting with Richmond on Saturday.

Great win for the Flyers. Defense was awesome, forcing X late into the shot clock many times resulting in hurried, contested shots. CW and MJ were spectacular and the bench, especially Thomas, Perry, and Searcy were outstanding.

The Flyers got lucky & Xavier had an off night. UD is a division two team & half their victories were walkover division two oponents. They only have one player Chris Wright that could make the Ohio State Team. The glory days are over for UD.

Watching the flyers tonight is like watching the Steelers - tremendous defense, and just enough offense to keep them winning. They have to be the sloppiest 22-3 team I’ve ever seen on the offensive side of the ball, but they seem to always find a way to make lemonaide out of the lemons. They are a gutsy ball club, and they’ll make the Big Dance, but they better find their shooting touch, or they will be one and out! Great win tonight. Go Flyers!!!

a fun win. team seems more confident than almost any of the good teams from the past. a win on Xavier’s home court might be necessary to prove to themselves that they belong and can win multiple games in the ncaa tourney.

Update on Lowery: “Lowery apparently hurt a tendon in the knee. He’ll have surgery on Thursday to find the extent of the damage, probably ending his season. ”That kid’s given his heart and soul to this team,” coach Brian Gregory said. ”We’ll find out tomorrow at the surgery what the situation will be.” -si.com Lowery, we’re rooting for you.

Just came from an Alumni function in Cleveland and we could not be happier. Tough win, way to go Flyers! For at least a day, I hope we hear nothing about SOS, BG can’t coach, CW is leaving, etc. Stay on course and we are in the NCAA, after that we’ll see but this team has done everything that anyone could have hoped for.

Anybody who says Brian Gregory is not a big time coach better check themselves. That was the most prepared Dayton team I’ve seen in a long time. BG is in the tradition of Blackburn and Donoher and Purnell. All our bigs played tremendous. Chris Johnson is flatout a stud that Thad Matta let get out of Columbus. Chris Wright when he perfects that 15 ft jumper is going to the next level. Marcus Johnson always plays his best in the big games. Charles Little was a rock. And what can you say about Stephen Thomas and Mickey Perry. Dayton you just punched your ticket but the good teams don’t let up. Keep chopping the wood!

What was with that Foul on the dunk in which the refs let them play a entire possession before deciding that the dunk foul 30 seconds ago meant the Xavier player got ft’s? Do over and delete the previous play. The dunk foul was bs to begin with; it was an in your face rebound dunk. The Xavier guy was standing under the basket offering no defense.

Nobody, Null included, should be referred to as a crackhead unless that person is one. Crack, or any form of cocaine, is a drug which is every bit as addicting and lethal as heroin. The term should never be used in jest. Believe me, if the crackhead is your parent, child, or sibling, it is no joke.

I would say that any XU fans that spend time posting here are sour grapes but since I am on my way to the the enquirer’s website to stick it them those XU jags I don’t care. Guess what, Dayton is better than XU this year. Don’t gimme schedule and SOS. XU beat bottm feeder BCS schools like LSU and the 2 ranked teams you played, Butler and Duke destroyed you.

Great win! The ESPN picture feed was terrible and very frustrating to watch. I would imagine any casual fan might have switched channels, bummmer. Flyer’s won in every aspect of the game, rebounding being the key, CW finally took over last 10 minutes. Rob L hurt is really bad news, half of our “Hair, Hustle, Hasassment” is gone. GO FLYERS ( 10 seed)

Hey X, how des that taste? I mean you got beat bad by UD’s backups. Upset, absolutely not, UD is by far the better TEAM at home, can’t wait to see the game at the Shitas Center. Nice PG by the way :) I think Halloway was trying to find a hole to hide in, what a choke job.

Fantastic!! This just proves that we need more people involved in our offense, instead of people just standing around and waiting for one guy to do it all offensively. This is as big as the win against Pitt last yr. Let’s see if we can sustain it. No reason why we can’t! Go Flyers!!!

Well, well, well, where are all of the Gregory “Nay” sayers now, huh?? Being 22-3 the second week in February comes by no accident. Folks in Section 203 I have to sit with, do you hear me?? With 6 games left (being conservative) they should finish 4-2. THat eould put them at 26-5 going into the A10 tourney. A couple of wins, 28-6 or bettter yet, WIN the tourney 29-5. I serioucsly think we are looking at a 6 or 7 seed. My hope is that we don’t get stuck with the 8 or 9 seed. That means we would play #1 in the second round. Go Flyers and Go Coach Gregory. To Rob Lowry, thanks for getting us to thie point, get in shape for one helluva ride next year!

Well, well, well, where are all of the Gregory “nay” sayers now? at 22-3 the second week of February is not accident. WSU fans, give it up. Your whole argument about bringing excitment into a rivalry between WSU and UD is now dead, leave it rest. We have our rivalry with X. To Rob Lowry, thanks for getting us to this point. Get healthy and in shape for “one helluva ride” next year! Go Flyers and most importantly, Go Coach Gregory!

We have had some hard times recently in Dayton. GM plant closing, foreclosures, But tonight for 13,345 fans in attendance and those watching at home, all is right with the world, we kicked Xavier’s A….Gee those 3 prematurely bald X’s fans sitting behind their bench sure got quiet. I did listen to the Xavier post game show, Coach Miller gave UD alot of credit, he has done a very nice job with that program. But last night was ours, great win we deserve it!
