Gregory wants Flyers to keep their cool

Dayton coach Brian Gregory wants his team to treat the Xavier clash like any other game, aside from playing with crazed intensity.

The Flyers will need to shoot a great percentage and protect the ball on offense like it’s the Shroud of Turin, but he doesn’t want them to try to do more than they’re capable of doing — a common pitfall in games of this magnitude.

“It means more (than other games). You wouldn’t be human if it didn’t. At the same time, you can’t go outside of the things you do well. Sometimes, the most important thing in a game like this is to stick with what you’re good at.”

The Flyers may need to beat Xavier to negate the loss to lowly Charlotte to keep their NCAA tournament hopes on course. But Gregory doesn’t think the setback to the 49ers should be viewed adversely.

“The biggest step our league needs to take — and we’re not there yet — is when you lose a game, especially on the road, that it won’t be considered a bad loss,” he said. “Some people will look at it that way. But Charlotte has been decimated with injuries and now has their entire team back.”

He thinks Xavier’s accomplishments shouldn’t be diminished by a loss at Duquesne, either.

“I already know how good Duquesne is. We went there and won a hard-fought game,” Gregory said. “We’re not there as a league, but I think people in the league understand (the difficulties on the road). The next step is to be known nationwide that these are tough places to play, they’re well-coached teams with talented players. I don’t think there’s any team in the country that wouldn’t take (Charlotte’s) Lamont Mack, the way he’s playing.”

Red Scare? Not really, Try Raider Scared! How can you be taken seriously when you are afraid of Wright State?

Yes, play with high intensity, but under control. Don’t give away possessions without getting a shot. No turnovers, especially from Warren and Lowrey. And stay on their 3 point shooters. Don’t leave them to help out somewhere else or they’ll put down the 3’s. Good luck Flyers, play well tonight.

I think the person who really needs to get this message is Chris Wright. He is going to be so jacked up, which is great…but he can’t spend 14 minutes on the bench in the first half with foul trouble. He is going to be matched up against Derrick Brown and needs to be under control and not let himself get pulled into a mano y mano battle with him. Go Flyers, the Cleveand Alumni are pulling for you!

The Flyers are a 3 point dog at home. Say What? The Flyers are a 3 point DOG at UD Arena? This tells me that Vegas knows a little something about betting so I don’t have a real good feeling about the outcome of this game. Unfortunately all the rah rahs, chants and chest puffing isn’t going to get the job done. I’m a realist, I see UD losing by seven.

To win against Xavier,Chris Wright must play his best game of the season.Comparing Chris to last year it seems he has lost some of his intensity. It may be from the injury or it could be he’s not getting support from his coaches.Either way Dayton must improve offensively and eliminate turnovers to be competive down the strech!!!

It’s usually close at the Arena and I expect nothing less. Any word on the flu bug and M Johnson and S Thomas?

I agree Tom. For Dayton to beat Xavier, someone on the Flyers squad will need a career game. Should be a great game!

I disagree - in order for Dayton to be successful tonight, no one person needs a carrer game. The players, as a team, must play to their potential and they will be fine. Minimize mistakes, spread the ball around, out hustle under the boards and be patient. They should look at film from the St. Joe’s game - that was a full team effort that brought that victory. No player should get it in their head that they have to be a hero.

Cleveland fan, it is very hard being a mid-major to get any time on national TV. The Big 6 schools calls the shots and we get the leftovers. There are a lot of mid-majors that get ZERO games on TV. Just be thankful for our 1 game a year.
