Flyers get some play in national media

UD’s 21-2 start is beginning to get the Flyers noticed in the national media:

• Tonight, in the 10 o’clock hour, UD coach Brian Gregory will be a guest on Fox Sports Radio. Gregory will chat with radio host Tony Bruno. Should be an entertaining segment.

• ESPN.com columnist Dana O’Neil featured UD sophomore Chris Wright is a story posted today. Wright’s mom, Ernestine Grigsby, is quoted extensively.

Wright leads the Flyers in scoring with 12.9 points per game. The Flyers are 35-4 (4-0 vs. ranked teams) the past two seasons with Wright in the lineup.

GO FLYERS! While I don’t necessarily agree with Coach Gregory’s coaching style of playing 12 men and constantly substituting, you can’t argue with their record at this point. I just wish they could develop their offense to be as good as their defense. They would be phenomenal if they could just “shoot” … 3 pointers and foul shots included. Whatever they do from this point on though … I’m a die-hard fan of the Dayton Flyers.

Everyone says the Flyers need to shoot 3’s better. That’s not who they are now. Brian Roberts, Brooks Hall, Ramond Marshall are gone. The reason they are 21-2 is BECAUSE they play 12 guys. They are 9-0 in games decided by less than 5 points. Some luck, but mostly because they are fresh at the end of the game. They are shooting free throws much better in conference play. The only critisism I have is because they don’t shoot well from beyond the arc, there are a couple players who need to be given the red light on taking 3’s.

Great article re: Chris Wright and his Mom. It’s nice to see the Flyers winning. So far the 12 man rotation is working. The Flyers finally have a group of core players.Right now the job is to beat Charlotte and that team from Cincinati. GO FLYERS Dave ‘69

Great article on Chris Wright. Let’s all give a big hand to Marcus Johnson, too. He’s been equally effective this season and certainly worthy of accolades. I just watched X take care of Temple…wow, they are mature and deadly from outside. I hope the boys watched that game to see how quickly they release the ball from outside, and how patiently they move without the ball. We’ll need an A+ effort to grab that one! Go Flyers!!

Let’s don’t look past Charlotte to Xavier. Let’s take care of business on the road in N. Carolina and then it all sets up for maybe one of the best Dayton/X games in recent history. The Flyers and UD Arena should be electric… Flyers fans have waited for this game for quite some time… But let’s beat Charlotte first…

Forget the national rankings. Who cares who is ranked 24th with 9 games left - two against “X”. The Flyers just need to stay focused and finish teams off. Defense wins close games, and that’s what they are doing very well. As long as they stay the course they’re on, they’ll be there at NCAA tourney time - - maybe a 9th or 10th seed, but they will be there.

UD gets a few lines nationally, BFD. Xavier is playing Temple on national television Thursday. Enjoy the NIT you frickin’ losers while X is in the NCAA

I like the UD Flyers, but in reality the Flyers haven’t really played anyone to grab National Attention. UD is a small school when it comes to the BB program. If they played teams like Ohio state, Indiana, Kentucky and so on and they beat them, then i would have respect for the little flyers.

Hey X MAN , Can you explain for the folks what your team has ever done for your head to be so big? It is funny how they do so well in the A-10 but if they were in a real conference, they would be an average team. Not saying Dayton is final four material, but Xavier is not that much better. You know nothing about basketball. You are a moron.

hey RUDE-E, you’re the moron! What has Xavier done??? Look @ their non-conference schedule; Puerto Rico Tourney (which X won by beating Mizzo, VA Tech & Memphis), Cincinnati, Duke, Butler, Virginia, LSU; granted Dayton did beat Marquette, but who else have they played??? They have had a cupcake non-conference schedule. Auburn is a wash b/c both schools beat them. Dayton is scared to play teams on the road. Why not schedule Cincinnati again??? Or even try bringing back the Gem City matchup.

Coach Gregory seems to be winning with smoke and mirrors. Don’t get me wrong, I am very excited about this years team. The true test will come against X. Keep up the good D and practice those free throws, it will make the difference. Go Flyers.

Come on Rich why would any sports program not schedule a game becuase they are affraid. Thats not the case the problem is UD has to have so many home games to support their athlectic programs. Its hard for them to get a home and away series with BCS schools for the same reason. You argue for a tougher schedule then you want us to play WSU that dont make any sense. Lets face it Xavier has been the team to beat in the A10 for awhile. Dont know why anyone would question what they have done.

I want the Flyers to keep flying under the radar, and focus on Charlotte. Then Xavier, who by the way is COMPLETELY OVERRATED. Xavier will go to the dance, but in their usual Cincinnati fashion will successfully pull defeat from the jaws of victory in the first round…

asd, you mean to tell me that wright state wouldn’t be better than bethune cookman or delaware state? if dayton is unable to lure formidable foes to ud arena, perhaps they should settle on a neutral site. It would also be nice to see the series b/n cincinnati & dayton resume.

To answer the question about what has Xavier won, please remember that that they are the 1st team from the state of Ohio to win the National Championship - 1958. Do you know who they beat? The Dayton Flyers… Remeber, Dayton was thrown out of their last conference and were going to be forced to be an independent until Xavier insisted that the A-10 include Dayton. Let’s not get all nasty gang. Let’s hope for 2 (maybe 3) great games against each other, and for multiple teams from the A-10 to get in the dance.

Well next Wednesday night the Flyers will finally play a good team. The Upset of Marquette was a surprise and probably a fluke. Xavier will beat em by 8 at UD Arena and once again prove they are far and away the best program in the A-10 and in the Mid-West right now. The Flyers have no chance and because the A-10 is so poor will not get in the NCAA unless they win the conference tournament which they can’t because Xavier will be playing in that tourney too.

Replying to this garbage: “Hey X MAN , Can you explain for the folks what your team has ever done for your head to be so big? While the Flyers fans sit at home or go to the NIT every year X is working their way through the NCAA to the elite 8 twice, the sweet 16 two more times and finishing in the top 25 8 of the last ten years. Get real UDs players aren’t good enough to mop the womens locker room at the Cintas Center. This aint 1969 or 1983 the Flyers havent done squat in decades.

Wow good to see the X UD rivalry is still alive, barely though as X has dominated UD and the A10 for years now. When will Gregory do something about UDs weak out of conference schedule? While X is playing, Duke, Memphis, LSU, Butler, Auburn, Virginia Tech, Mizzu UD schedules power houses like Wolford,Bethune Cookman, Delaware State, Troy, Mercer, Coppin State, Akron, and UNC Greensboro. What a joke my sons 7th grade team could go 21-2 against UDs schedule.

Xavier will go to the dance, but in their usual Cincinnati fashion will successfully pull defeat from the jaws of victory in the first round… “ John I understand that UD fans stop paying attention to basketball in March as they are always finished playing by then but at least don’t embarrass yourself and Flyer fans by making asinine comments. Xavier won the A10 and the A10 Torney in 08 got a three seed in the NCAA and advanced to play UCLA in the Elite 8 last year. In 2007 X lost in the second round in overtime to Ohio State who went on to play in the Championship game. X has dominated the A10 for 10 years, has made two elite 8 appearances in the last 5 years, has had two more sweet 16s in last years, and been ranked in the top 25 9 of the last ten years. Now wow me with your vast knowledge of basketball and reel off what UD has done in the last 40 years. There is no comparison and UD fans need to admit it at the risk of looking stupid.

Why are people just now noticing the Flyers ? I guess it was because Marquette was over rated . And Dayton has played no one .A-10 is down . Xavier and Dayton have it easy . And it will show in the NCAA tournament .

By SLAP! SHOT

February 6, 2009 9:49 PM | Link to this

SLAP youre crazy before conference play started X had one of the highest RPIs in the country and their strength of schedule was top 3. DUKE, MEMPHIS, BUTLER, MIZZU, Virginia Tech. Dayton has had it easy, and won’t even make the Tournament. Xavier will be a 2 or 3 seed and advance to at least the sweet 16.

Is isn’t this the DAYTON Daily News? Doesn’t the Cincinnati Enquirer allow people to comment? Why are Xavier fans on here? Get your own newspaper! I’ve never undertood why fans want to go to other teams papers, forums, blogs. Get a life.

By Hey Tim Brooks

Tim: you don’t think there are Xavier fans in Dayton, Springboro, Lebanon Centerville ect. This is a public forum and we’ll post our opinion here if we see fit. Plus it educates the stupid UD fans to the facts. I mean honestly look at some of the moronic uneducated comments some of these posters have made about UD being better than X. By the way dayton is part of the Cincinnati Metroplex, basically a minor league suburb of a major league city.

Relax…… UD fans are just jealous of Xavier’s success. It is kind of like liberals being jealous bc someone makes a lot of money…… Liberals and UD fans are always OUTRAGED that someone makes more money/their chief rival is way better than them. UD fans are just little punky crybabies, well, most of them. Xavier is a proven success, and will stomp on UD Feb 11. Good luck to both teams, by I say Xavier by 9. Go X !!!!!!!

By Jim

February 7, 2009 11:41 PM | Link to this

Harry! How can you say you do not agree with Brian Gregory’s substitution strategy? It is the smartest thing a coach can do when he has plenty of talent with nearly the same skill sets and mostly the atheletic stamina to intimidate you with 100% defensive intensity. They get plenty of rest and wear down other teams. They will need that during the NCAA tournament and the teams with more depth as well.

By Jim

February 7, 2009 11:53 PM | Link to this

Coach Gregory. Don’t change a thing. Your strategy is perfect. I believe we belong in the same classification as Xavier this year. The only reason we don’t is our schedule this year is a little softer. If we had the same schedule I believe we would be the better team. Wait to see who wins the A10 standings and tournament. We will reign and go deep in the NCAA. You see. We are a team who needs to play the better teams. We play at a much higher intensity against highly talented teams. BG is out to prove how good, how powerfull, how athletic and how focused he has this team playing by tournament time. They are the true definition of TEAM. They are there for each other.
