Flyers win on Johnson’s dunk
PHILADELPHIA — Marcus Johnson scored on a dunk with 1.2 seconds to go to give Dayton a 63-61 win over La Salle here Wednesday night.
With the game tied, UD’s Chris Wright missed an off-balance drive after starting from the top of the key, but Johnson grabbed the rebound off the rim and jammed it in one motion.
La Salle’s Rodney Green missed a half-court heave at the buzzer as the Flyers improved to 21-2 overall and 7-1 in the Atlantic 10. The Explorers fell to 12-9, 3-4.

I don’t care how we win anymore as long as we keep winning. We play down to our opponents & play like crap on the road. If we split the series with Xavier, I’ll be content.By Mike

Love it! What they like in shooting skill they make it up with effort and heart. I think that is 9-0 in games decided by 5 points or less.By ha

Xavier is comparable to Marquette. And they have had some close wins that should have been blow-outs. They are not without fault. Sure, they are more mature, but on any given day… they can be beaten…just like anyone else. Speculation or arguing about it doesn’t do anyone any good. We’ll just see what happens on game day!By Critic #1

Thank goodness the Flyers were able to gut it out and will themselves a win, no thanks to Coach Gregory. Why do I say that? UD starts the 2nd half up by 11, and every possession for the first 3 minutes of the second half they forced the ball into Huelsman in the low post and he either missed the shot or turned the ball over, and their lead was gone. WHY???? I have nothing against Kurt Huelsman. He plays hard, plays decent defense, blocks a shot here and there and rebounds—-but everybody in the world, except Coach Gregory knows that he is NOT an offensive player. Why does the Coach continue to have his players force the ball into him in the low post? Why is the Coach trying to force him to be an offensive threat, when he isn’t? This is a terrible strategy and it almost cost the Flyers another win. But thank goodness the players were once again able to overcome the poor strategy and stubborness of their coach. Go Flyers!By Hank

I’m one who thinks BG is a good coach, but I also question a move in the first half when UD was on a break with numbers, London Warren driving and BG calls a timeout in the middle of a break. He then pulls Warren and plays Stephen Thomas. That ended up leading to a five point swing in LaSalle’s favor.By doug

Style points waved bye-bye to us weeks ago. We need to keep racking up the wins any way we can. The real problem is, we have more chances to blow it then opportunities to clinch it. One game at a time.By Ron

The second half was painful but the end…up by 2 with 1:30 left and you have clock violation? Why does this team always hold the ball until 10 seconds before the clock runs out? They never get a good shot doing that and most of the time they have turnovers as a result. A road win is a road win, glad for that but they should have put this team away easy. Xavier could be real ugly. I hope they play up to them like they did Marq.By markh

You really have to give BG more credit. This team is 21-2 because of competitiveness (or “heart”), defensive scheme and rebounding—and those come from coaching.By Joe

Hank, BG called the time out and pulled LW because on the defensive end we left a guy wide open for a 3 and no one attempted to close out on him. He missed the shot but it only takes one open look like that to get a cold shooter started. BG doesn’t hide the fact that defense is most important to him (and apparently discussing a defense mistake is more important than a break away to him).By bub

There would be less reliance on “heart” and “gut” if the brains were engaged at the level they need to be. LAZY passes… vigilante moves by the wrong players, and poor substitutions. I’m not saying BG is a bad coach, but he, like his players, sometimes makes bone-headed decisions at critical times. The “gut” and “heart” have played through those decisions much of the time…thank goodness the players really want the win.By supporter

BG does a lot of things right as a coach, which has resulted in a 21-2 record. You can’t be a bad coach and win that many games. Sure he makes a mistake occasionally, but who doesn’t. He’s a great coach and has exceeded everyone’s expectations this year.By Jer

Dayton was the team tha looked tired in the 2nd half and out of sync. Guess no one wants to consider their rough flight with a 1am landing in Allentown instead of Philly, with hotel accommodations being made on the fly, getting to bed about 2am, then having to get up early to take a bus from Allentown to Philly and prepare for the game as a possibility for a 2nd half fatigue issue. nah, didn’t think so. Folks been there and it is very tiring and mentally fatiguing as well. And even 20 year olds can get thrown off track when the routine is unexpectedly changed. Still they gutted out a win. 21 - 2 and the only team in the nation at 9-0 when the points are less than 5.By Hank

I had hoped to get in here before all the “downers” but it appears I am too late. Don’t know what more people want. When you looked at this team before the season with their lack of experience, and watched their first few games and noticed the difficulty scoring consistently, even the biggest homers (like me) had to acknowledge that this may be a tough year. Well guess what, they’re 21-2 and have put themselves in a great position for an NCAA bid and a winnable first round game even if we can’t beat X. After that, all bets are off but who cares. Going back to my earlier point, did you really expect more? This team doesn’t always look pretty, but they play their butts off and they are winning games that we lost last year (and in years previous). At a time when the city of Dayton needs something positive, is it so hard to just enjoy this without always being hung up on the coach, the schedule, they’re not Xavier, etc? Because yes, we’re not X and have a way to go, but 21-2 regardless of schedule and a chance to play in the Big Dance is how you start. I, for one, am enjoying the ride even if I can only see the games in nervewracking fashion over the Internet more than 15 years after graduating from UD. And I also don’t want to hear from the long suffering fans who says it has already been too long. I was there during the O’Brien years and waited patiently for OP to pick things up, and now BG to get things back on the right track. Keep going Flyers, I’l take an ugly win anyday!By Bhoops

I played college ball at a D1 mid major. Any win in confrence play is huge, especially on the road. It doesn’t matter the opponent because all teams elevate their intensity and effort during confrence play. There is one factor people are forgetting. Ability to make big plays in late game situations to win. Forget the opponenet, forget the schedules… It is a gift to have players who come up big when needed. Dayton has shown they can keep their composure and deliver the punch to win. BG is a good coach. Ask any other college coach in the profession. He has maximized his strengths, defense, transition, and rebounding for a heck of a season. I laugh at the arm chair coaches who try and analyze his coaching. Critic #1… The FLYERS are a dribble drive perimeter oriented team whom does not shoot well from the outside. By going inside out, it keeps the defense honest and opens up the perimeter lanes for scoring opportunites. I can assure you BG is not going inside out with Huelsman scoring as the the only primary. He understands that post entry shifts the defense. I will be the first to say, that offense is not KURT’s strength. However, he can pass out of the post.By ed leschansky

The unused time out that BG uses at the end of the half does nothing other than give the opposing team a chance to set up a defense. How many goals were scored after the time out? La Salle was on its heels before the time out gave them a breather and a five point swing EdBy UD MOM

I don’t care how UD wins; I’m just glad they’re winning. They have the ‘desire’ unlike the Bengals and the Reds. It’s great for the Dayton metro to have a winning team to root for ! Xavier - they better watch out !By kurt
