Gregory says Johnson ‘fine’

Dayton coach Brian Gregory is optimistic junior guard Marcus Johnson will be cleared for the La Salle game Wednesday.

Johnson suffered a knee injury after colliding with teammate Chris Wright in the waning minutes against Saint Joseph’s on Sunday.

“He’s fine. He just had a little bruise on the knee,” Gregory said on the Atlantic 10 teleconference today. “Chris Wright missed a free throw, and as Marcus sprinted down court, him and Marcus banged knees.

“He’s always had a little tendonitis in his knee, and it’s a little extra tender. He had ice on it right away. He’s got to get two days of a lot of rehab and stretching, and I think he’ll be OK on Wednesday.”

The Flyers put together one of their best showings of the season in a 69-58 win over St. Joe’s, making 7-of-11 three-pointers, holding the Hawks to 34.6-percent shooting and grabbing a 35-29 advantage on the boards.

UD led by six at halftime and opened the second half with a 10-3 run to put the game away, getting a pair of 3-pointers from Johnson.

“In some other games, we maybe did some specific things better, but all the way around — our defensive intensity, our coverage on the backboards, stepping up to the line and making free throws — every facet was pretty good,” Gregory said.

“The only one that maybe wasn’t as good as it could be was the opportunities in the open court. We were loose with the ball. At the same time, I make it hard on our (point guards). Those guys have to do a lot of stuff. The intensity and pace they need to play with for us to be successful … at times it’s almost an impossible task to slow down and make great decisions with the ball.

“What’s happened is we’ve done enough things to compensate for that shortcoming when we do have it. But for a 40-minute stretch against a team like (St. Joe’s), you had to be on the top of your game, and we were.”

Great job by Brian Gregory on managing this mighty deep team. Just in for UD is 69 votes and a number 26 ranking in the Coaches poll. Keep it up Flyers!!!

another good outing I agree however I disagree on the point guard play its to out of control LW is so out of control is causing to many turnovers same wih RL and LW could put up a couple shots from the perimeter to keep defenses from packing in to free up CW and CL.

Xavier just signed a 10 year deal with Wake Forest. I heard that Prarie View A&M is looking for some long term contracts, UD would be a perfect fit. BTW, when we join the Big East, we are not going to drag you along.

Dayton is 20-2 and one of their losses was at UMass. Kansas is 17-4 and UMass beat them at Kansas. So why is Kansas ranked above Dayton in both polls? The polls are mostly a popularity contest. UD has every right to be ranked above Kansas at this time!

Ed, you are an idiot. Rankings are not based on one game. Your team has played a weak as hell schedule. Didn’t Green Bay beat the crap out of UMass? Maybe Green Bay should be #26.

In Response to XavierFan: I know it’s not based on one game. I did mention that UD is 20-2 and Kansas, after winning last night is now 18-4. Also, I don’t see where Kansas has beaten anyone as good as Marquette, or did I miss something there too? Based on what both teams have accomplished thus far, I have to believe that UD has performed as well or better than Kansas, but doesn’t have as popular a name!

Ed, the Jayhawks are DEFENDING National Champions, have made several Final Four appearances and have made the NCAA Tournament for 20+ straight years. It is a matter of respect, and Dayton has not earned that respect yet. Get into the tournament, win a couple of games, do it for several years straight then talk about Kansas in the same sentence with Dayton. Xavier is much more on par with Kansas than Dayton. Seriously, get over yourself. Kansas is a Top 5/10 program - Dayton maybe a top 75, maybe.

UD has one of the worst Strength of Schedules in the country. Wright State would be 18-4 if they played a cupcake schedule like the Flyers.
