Flyers at 26th spot in national polls
Dayton made a significant jump in the national polls after beating Saint Joseph’s for its third straight win Sunday but not enough to crack either the Associated Press or ESPN-USA Today coaches Top 25.
The Flyers have the 26th-most votes in each poll. Last week, they were 36th in the AP Top 25 and 33rd in the coaches ratings.
The Flyers are getting some love elsewhere. They’re ranked 24th in the collegehoops.net Power 50, and they’ve become fixtures in NCAA tournament bracket projections.
ESPN’s Joe Lunardi, who correctly picked all 34 at-large teams last year, has Dayton as a ninth seed now in his bracket. In other words, comfortably in.
But the Flyers, of course, still have much work left. They have nine regular-season games to go, beginning with road trips to La Salle and Charlotte before coming home to face league favorite Xavier.

After watching the Flyers beat a good St. Joe team and getting their record to 20-2, they deserve their No. 26 ranking in both polls. Actually after seeing who is ranked above them, they could deserve even a little higher ranking. Whether they can keep on winning, especially with two road games this week, remains to be seen. They played a very well against St. Joe and if they can maintain playing with the same intensity they played with in that game who knows how good they can become. I’m really liking this team. They make mistakes, but they play with a lot of heart.By bobby

UD’s defense was outstanding Sunday. The St. Joe team they beat, however, will not be playing in the NCAA in March.,,, Doug, how many teams on Dayton’s schedule will be playing in the NCAA tournamnent this year?By texasfan

20 wins is 20 wins, but Marquette and Xavier look to be the only NCAA tourney teams the Flyers have played. Maybe George Mason has a shot in their tourney as does Creighton. UD must win the 2 raod games against 2 teams they clearly should beat, then, well maybe, they could beat Xavier.By hank

Is it just me or do the Flyer have to ‘prove’ a lot more than some other teams in order to be ranked? Its very frustrating. X gets a lot of opportunities to play themselves out of the top 25 whereas one misstep will have the Flyers playing themselves out of the tournament.By Herman

bobby, we have only played one team in the top 50 so far this year (Marquette). They are the only one who will be in the tourney. Xavier will be the only other team we play that will be in the tourney.By Nate

Awesome that UD is ranked #26 (should be #25-Utah State’s schedule is even weaker than Dayton’s). Hey-where is Wright State ranked?? Oh-NO WHERE to be found!! Even Big Bad Horizon Conference “stand-out” Butler lost to UW-Green Bay by 9 points…PATHETIC!! All you idiots that have been arguing the A-10 and Horizon are on an equal level can stop your blubbering now!By DaytonDawg

Dayton could only dream of being on Butler’s level. Plus what’s so hard about winning at Xavier? We did it first shot. Congrats on the big win over St. Joes who lost to Holy Cross and Drexel. PATHETIC!! CLOWNBy thepummeler

Give me a break Bozo the DaytonDawg Clown-Butler’s “level?” What level is that??If Butler played in the Big East, they would be below .500. The only reason they have such a good record is because they play teams like Wright State all year.By DaytonKaat

I hope Butler wins the Horizon too so that they can get slaughtered in the first road of the tournament. Then I will remember what all the stupid idiots said on this post and just laugh and laugh and laugh….By Wright State Student

The win Sunday was big and important in moving the team forward. I just hope this streaky team takes the disrespect of being 20-2 (being one of only two teams to beat top 10 Marquette) and not in either Top 25 list and uses it to thoroughly thrash LaSalle and Charlotte. I wouldn’t mind bashing Xavier, either, but I’ll take anything besides a complete collapse.By sec 312

Wright State student…wow nice education, just what are you trying to say??? One thing is for sure, Flyers are a fun team to watch this year, I just love them flying around and we finally have above the rim players. I think 26th is about right.By Butlergrad, UD Fan

I agree that Dayton is no where near Butler’s level… Butler is a team that came within a few shots of knocking off Florida a couple years ago and within a shot of another Sweet 16 birth last year against Tennessee… Where was Dayton when this was happening? Sitting at home or playing and losing in the NIT to second-tier teams. Marquette was a great win that keeps getting better, but Dayton is a huge step behind programs like Gonzaga, Xavier, and yes Butler. And for the record, Butler went in to Cintas and knocked off Xavier this year, so before you try to say UD is better, try winning in Cincinnati first.By Jim

I don’t think the result of the St. Joe’s game was considered by the poll voters. Don’t they vote on Sundays based on game results ending Saturday night (to account for late results from the West coast)? If so,then with a win Wednesday @ La Salle, which I wouldn’t take for granted, then the voters would consider both the St. Joe and La Salle result…it would be a no brainer to receive a top 25 ranking. The Flyers are playing consistently and with great effort now ever since the “players only” meeting. Go Flyers!By Brandon

Jim - the voters vote Monday, considering all games over the weekend. The St. Joe’s game was definitely considered as evidenced by the huge jump in votes (it definitely wasnt the SLU game)!!! As for the whole Butler/UD discussion…one game does not define a team. Butler has had great teams in recent years, but that is a product of being in the Horizon League. There is something to be said for being a big fish in a very small pond. Not knocking Butler, they have a good program, and in the last decade are definitely better than UD…but if you look at the history of the programs UD wins…of course, they also win hands-down over Xavier historically, but that has not helped in recent years.By Matt

How is Dayton regarded as a great basketball town. These comments alone trying to compare UD to Butler are insane. Butler hangs Sweet 16 banners while UD talks about hoping to make the tournament. What fantasy land are you guys in? Butler would win the A-10. They won at Xavier, something you haven’t done in like 30 years.By Dave

Let’s look at this realistically—-this is a team that plays to its competition. That is a bad thing when you play the Fordham’s of the world and a great thing when you play Marquette and Xavier. The talent is there for this team to be a fixture in the top 25—-but not yet. They are right where they belong until they win both games this week and beat Xavier at home.A win AT Xavier and the sky will be the limit——with a sweet 16 berth in the realm of possibility.By Matt

Butler is 8-8 all-time in the NCAA tourney, UD is 13-15. UD has been a lot more than Butler, UD has been National Runner-Up, Butler has never made the final 4. Once again, I am talking about the program historically, not recent years. Nobody will argue Butler has been more successful in the past decade, but over time Dayton has the much stronger program. The first-ever NBA rookie of the year played at UD, UD has been called the greatest basketball city in the country by Dick Vitale. UD Arena has hosted the second-most NCAA tourney games of any venue. If you want more stats, UD has been to 8 Sweet 16’s, Butler has been to 3. UD averages 13000+ fans a game, Butler averages about 4000. Once again, I am looking at the big picture, Dayton has a much better program.By boxter

UD has played NO ONE. They are a 1st round loser in the NCAA. Come on folks, enjoy their “fake” record but when the play a REAL team …they are done. the y are a good local small college team.By Flyerguy

Guys, Lets be honest about the “History” of our program. Most of our accolades came More than TWO DECADES ago. We have not had near the success that Butler has had in the past ten years or so. You could argue that UD has a better “Program” than Florida! They were squat until Donovan shows up, then they win 2 titles. Its a what have you done for me lately sport. UD hasnt done anything for me lately. We all want to think our Flyers should be in the top 25, and maybe they do with a 20-2 record. But the fact is you have to beat somebody worth anybody. Butler is Ranked because they Beat Xavier at Xavier, and they play a “consisistant” schedule with some big boys on top. We play a few big boys and then a “homer” schedule. Its just the way our AD has wanted things and we have to suffer the consequences. Yeah we could probably beat a lot of teams but we dont get the opportunity. Give Butler credit for their willingness to play anyone! Dont knock the Wright State’s of the world, they are on par with national attendance and are in the top half of the RPI. Lets Knock the Coppin States, Bethune-Cookman, and Delaware State’s. Go Flyers.By Matt

Here’s the skinny on the schedule. UD isn’t supposed to be that good this year. This year was a lead-in to next year with all of the seniors. The schedule was easier since the AD didn’t think they were going to be this good. That’s one reason this year’s schedule has so many home push-overs.By Jerseyflyer

Anyone remember the old Alfred Hitchcock movie from 1972 titled “Frenzy”? It was one of the 1st slasher pics. UD’s Hoop team reminds me of this well done slasher film.Gory blood and guts grinders who dismember opponents with in yer face defense. That’s how we’re made up. Not pretty but deadly effective on victims. LaSalle is next in DA HOOD of Philly. Bring bandages! Oh and some big time Dunks too.JerseyFlyer will be in the building. Go UD……By Bhoops

Dayton vs. Butler would be a great matchup. Statistically, they are both top ten in nation in defense and both have big non-confrence road wins. (UD Marquette, Butler Xavier) This game would be decided on the boards. With that in mind, Dayton gets the edge. In addition, Dayton’s defense would cause the DAWGS to shoot a low percentage. Dayton wins…By Joe

I in no way condone the Wright State bashing (or comparisons to UD for that matter) but I saw this quote on ESPN and I had to pass it on. Andy Katz in analyzing the bracket buster games said “Northeastern was stuck playing at Wright State in a game that does nothing but hurt the Huskies.” Too funny…By Len

As a long time Flyer fan, if Chris Wright decides to transfer after this season, I hope he goes to Florida. I’d love to see him on national television beating the crap out of Kentucky. Also, I think CW would be a perfect fit for the Billy Donovan style of basketball. Chris would be an instant national celebrity as a Gator and we could all be so proud to see one of our Flyers make it to the big time.By Jim@SportzInc

My sources have indicated that Chris Wright, as long as he is healthy at the end of the season, will try to transfer - and he has listed 4 teams to be at the top, with 3 others not so high up. The Top 4, in no particular order, are Indiana with Tom Creen, Louisville, Missouri (has family ties there) and Michigan State (which, I heard, is the least likely of the top 4) and the other three include Notre Dame, Clemson and Xavier ((which won’t happen.) I have also heard a couple of other schoools, Michigan, Pitt, Kentucky, and Tennessee, but I can not get confirmation through sources that insiders have contacted him (if you know what I mean.) Dayton will be losing Chris Wright, bc he has real NBA potential.By FaithfulFlyer65

Why in the world would CW want to leave Dayton? He is from here, so his family gets to see him play all the time. He would have to sit out a year if he transferred to any major school, and the Flyers are primed to be one of UD’s all time best teams next season with a legitimate expectation to finish in the Top 15 teams in the country. He’s worked hard for 2 years to get this team to the heights that he is going to help take them this season and the next 2 seasons. Leaving would be the most foolish thing he could do.By Henry

If Dayton beats Xavier at home they will get an invite to the Big Dance. It’s that simple. The Committee is looking for one more splash win on Dayton’s resume. The Flyers could still make the Tourney(if they lose twice to Xavier) if they go deep in the A-10 Tournament, but as one alumni of a major college told me ” If Dayton beats Xavier they’re in.” Boys go out and beat Xavier!! The invite is in your hands….By Dana

Chris Wright will not transfer. 1-he is a Dayton area native and has family here. 2-Why leave after 2 years, sit out junior year, only to come back and have 1 year of exposure left? Scouts will find the good players, no matter where they are. Trust me, people know who Chris Wright is and are watching him NOW. He seems like a smart kid and if he has the right mentors, he will stay put and continue to gain recognition…and maybe some more Top 10 spots on ESPN!By Danny

What is with the CW stuff? Jim, I know you have no clue because you listed two guys that BG is extremely close with (Izzo and Crean). Buddy, they wouldn’t take him if he begged for a scholarship. They simply wouldn’t do it under any circumstance. Second, why would he transfer now? He would sit a year and play just one. If he wanted to leave he would just go to the NBA (which he also won’t do after this year). My goodness, are some of you that dumb or do you just think it is funny?By joey
