Flyers cruise to victory over St. Joe’s
Chris Wright had 14 points and Charles Little and Marcus Johnson added 13 apiece to lead Dayton to its sixth straight victory, a 69-58 win over visiting Saint Joseph’s on Sunday.
Ahmad Nivins, who was averaging 20.2 points and 11.7 rebounds, finished with 12 points and 13 rebounds for St. Joe’s (12-8, 5-1), which had its seven-game winning streak snapped.
The Flyers’ victory looked as if it may have been costly when Johnson injured his right knee with 2:18 to go. He was writhing on the floor while receiving medical attention. It turns out, though, he suffered only a bruised knee when he collided with teammate Chris Wright and is expected to be OK when UD visits La Salle on Wednesday.

Wow. A complete game against a solid opponent. After the first few minutes of the 2nd half, the outcome was never in doubt despite amazing free-throw accuracy from StJoes. Nice job!By UD Hoops

That was a great game. 3-0 on the home stand. Can’t argue with anything right now. This team should receive some national recognition. Let’s hope Marcus is healthy.By Doug

When they play to their potential - they are (almost) unbeatable. Let’s hope Johnson is ok. 20-2? Somebody pinch me.By FaithfulFlyer65

YES!!!! I’ve been critical of the team in the past, especially Coach Gregory and Kurt Huelsman. But not today! BG coached his best game since he arrived in Dayton, and KH played his best game. Not because he scored 6 points, but because of his court awareness and his defense. I never saw a Dayton team play with more intensity that this team did for the first half and the first 6 minutes of the second half. If not for some mental lapses with turnovers in the second half, they couldn’t have played a more perfect game. Keep up the good free throw shooting CL, you’re doing well. I pray that Marcus Johnson is not badly injured, because this team is just hitting its stride and they need him. His two 3-pointers to start the second half were huge, and taking nothing away from CW, Marcus is still the leader of this 20-2 team. Keep going Flyers!By BG

20 wins, 20 wins, 20 wins Sounds great! Only 3 teams can say that right now. By the end of February our SOS will be around 100 with a rpi around 30. All this talk about a weak schedule will be history.By Not so fast

Okay, will pinch you after they play Xavier next wed. They played well today and took care of business. The problem is they are not cosistantly a good shooting team from the outside. The second problem is when they play a physical team they are beaten, like UMASS. They do continue to improve each game and are the second best team in the A10 and could get to the second round in NCAA.By itsme

Yes, UD played a good game today. Very subtle, but Chris Johnson is a true star in the making. he does all the little things to win games.By thepummeler

you’re right itsme, and Searcy is becoming a more solid two-way player every game. Paul Williams seems to be progressing steadily from his injury. He didn’t look too good earlier this seasonBy Ed

20-2 I’m elated. They deserve some national recognition after taking apart a good St. Joe team. I hope they enjoy the win, but don’t gloat too much. They have 2 road games coming up against 2 decent teams. It’s hard to win on the road and splitting those two games wouldn’t be bad. On the other hand, win them both and the Xavier game will be a classic. Lose them both and, Oh well!By RR

Two wins this week will put UD ready to play X for first place with a 22-2 record. Kudos on improvement at the free throw line. Little has led the way. The recruits must be impressed, they know they’ll play immediately and have a chance to take a ride on the 2009+ Tourney Express!!!!By Robert M Kraus Sr

I think that the flyers are under-rated. I think that they should rank much higher in the polls. rmk, akronBy amy katz

actually edm the mid-majority is considered the ‘expert’ source on teams not in the top six conferences and UD is in their top 10 http://www.midmajority.com/2009/01/the-state-of-the-other-22-week-13.php#moreBy Matt

Good win against St. Joes. Very solid game but once again St. Joes in nowhere near a great team this year by any stretch. Must win at La Salle on Wednesday or this game means nothing.By john

It was nice to see a whole game with everyone contributing. KH played well, his effort and court awareness meant a lot. Team improved in turnover area. Effort and smart play made a big difference.By Jartavius Odoms

They did be lookin good against St Joe but they got to beat Zavier to get me props. They is a good team cant nobody deny that but until they beats Zavier they is just the second best team in a weak A-10.By sec 312

What a great start! I have not missed a game and I am impressed with our progress as a team. People will soon recognize that BG does the best with what he has. Not perfect, maybe not enough to beat Xavier, but enough to get national recognition. GO FLYERS!By Sean Finn

Coach G is a great coach and was one of the most influential people in my life. I was thousands of miles from home and he was truly like a father to me. I love Coach G, this U, and the fans. It’s great to see the success that this team is having. Moved on to new endeavors, but I will ALWAYS be a Dayton Flyer!By Sean Finn

If the FLYERS shoot 38% or better from 3, and continue to play high pressure d, we will be tough to beat come March. My fear is that we don’t have the potential to be a consistent high percentage shooting team from the perimeter. We simply don’t have pure shooters who can stretch the D and open up the lane. I wish Mickey would take more 3’s. Fundamentally, he has the best form and most potential to knock down 3’s. GO FLYERS… You deserve recognition for your amazing D, boards, and offensive transtion game.By Dave in the CLE

This season is a turning point. The only way Dayton can and will earn respect is to go deep into the tourney, not once, but a few years in a row. That’s how Xavier, Butler, Gonzaga, Davidson have done it. They have earned the benefit of the doubt, we haven’t. The tourney is how people learn your program and what they remember. And that’s how we’ll be able to schedule better teams in the future. Playing us won’t be a “bad loss or okay win” for an opponent… we’ll be a “good loss or great win” for an opponent. But it starts this tourney. Gotta show up and gotta WIN some games!
