Gregory ready to face A-10 coaching royalty
Dayton’s Brian Gregory is going against two coaching giants this week in Rick Majerus of Saint Louis and Phil Martelli of Saint Joseph’s. Majerus has a 449-170 career record, Martelli 272-159.
“My second league game as a coach was against Temple and John Chaney,” Gregory said. “I told the guys, ‘He’s got 700 wins. I’m not out-coaching this guy, so you guys better out-play ‘em.’
“With coach Majerus and coach Martelli, you’re not just talking about two of the best coaches in college basketball, you’re talking about two of the best coaches who ever COACHED in college basketball.”
Gregory is in his sixth year and has a 116-62 record. He’s 3-0 against Majerus and 3-3 against Martelli.
Majerus has a .725 winning percentage, Gregory .652 and Martelli .631.
“As I’ve learned in my ‘vast experience’ now, it’s not the X’s-and-O’s, it’s the Jims-and-Joes,” Gregory said.

I wonder whether Detroit was afraid of St Louis because Rick Majeris is a “coaching legend”. If Detroit from the Horizon beat them by 10, we should beat the Bilikins by 30.By EarnestS

To put it in perspective, Wright State is ranked 90 in the Sagarins and St Louis is 167. WSU is way better than St Louis so I agree with you, Thomas.By Sam

You guys are clueless. St Louis is not a patsy. WSU has been ranked ahead of us in the RPI’s for two of the past three years. WSU would be a very tough game for us. They are a lot better than most teams in the A10. Now, lets go beat the crap out of SL.By Critic #1

Just as a loss to GW or St. Bonnie would have been critical to the Flyers Big Dance chances, so would be a loss to St, Louis. It’s a must win game because it’s a team they should beat easily, especially on their home court. Dayton has yet to play the better teams in the A-10 like St. Joe, Temple, Rhode Island, and Xavier. That’s why they need to win games like this.By cantbeatagoodfilet

UD should beat STL, but winning by 30 is unrealistic considering the tough defense and deliberate offense that STL plays. Even covering the 11 point spread is doubtful.By Steve

There is no question the UD has the better athletes and home court advantage against St. Louis. The only question is will BG get out-coached?By doug

Funny, when thinking about current coaching ‘legends’ or ‘royalty’ - Martelli would never cross my mind. 272 doesn’t seem like a whole lot to me. Kryzyewski, Calhoun, Boeheim, Huggins, Williams, Pitino - these are coaching legends. Oliver Purnell has 350 carrer victories - is he a legend? Don’t hype the game up more then it needs to be.By Henry

I thought the same thing when I read “coaching royalty”. Brian Gregory is saying the same thing that all coaches say about each other. Most sports writers know that it is BS but Doug Harris falls for it every time.By Henry

Here are a few other names that should be called “Coaching Royalty”: Bobby Knight, Dean Smith, … saying that Phil Martelli is coaching royalty diminishes the term.
