Sedric Toney realizes dream in playing at UD

Notes and quotes from Dayton’s 80-68 win over St. Bonaventure and the festivities to honor the 1983-84 and 1973-74 teams on the anniversaries of their accomplishments Sunday:

• Sedric Toney, now a basketball analyst for ESPN, on playing at UD: “I used to sit in our living room watching the games on TV and fantasizing about playing for the Flyers. For it to come true is indescribable.”

• Toney on Roosevelt Chapman’s famous boast before dousing Wayman Tisdale and Oklahoma with 41 points in the second round of the ‘84 NCAA tournament: “He said, ‘We’ll see who the real All-American is.’ Coach (Don Donoher) was livid. … But I think Chap got us stirred up, and he was stirred up himself, and he had one of the greatest games in NCAA history.”

• Ed Young on the game-winning banker to beat No. 3 DePaul in ‘84: “People come up to me all the time. It’s very flattering. It’s nice to be recognized. … But what people don’t remember is Larry (Schellenberg) got one of the greatest rebounds of all time (after a missed foul shot to start the sequence of events).

“Sedric was on the left, and I was trailing the play. Everyone knows Chap was getting the ball, and I was just thinking about getting the rebound. It was nice to make that shot. It was very spontaneous. It was just boom-boom-boom. It was a lucky shot.”

• Don Donoher on the ‘84 team: “Everybody really understood their role. If you look at the films, everybody knew who the kingpin was (Chapman). He carried us. But he didn’t carry us in rebounding and defense, just scoring.”

• The Flyers have won 14 games in a row at home dating to last year, tying for the seventh-longest streak in the nation.

• UD and St. Bonaventure each grabbed 33 rebounds. The Flyers are 15-0 when they win the battle of the boards and 2-2 when they don’t.

• Bonnies junior guard Chris Matthews tied a school record for 3-pointers with eight in 17 attempts. He finished with a career-high 28 points.

I saw where this week’s Top 25 just came out in two polls. How in the world does Georgetown keep getting ranked? They got clobbered on their home floor by West Virginia (who did not make the top 25) and followed it up with a loss at Seton Hall. Those polls are a farce. I don’t believe that those who vote even watch what is going on. they just vote for name and reputation!

Every team in the top 25 has played a tougher schedule than us. There is no conspiracy against Dayton. The problem is that we have played a crappy schedule. And the A10 is equivalent of the Horizon League so wins in the A10 are not going to help except Xavier. We have one chance to make a name for ourselves and that is to beat X.

Playing a tough schedule doesn’t mean anything if your not winning those games. Who is to say that UD can’t beat teams who have already lost 5 or 6 games and don’t even have a winning record in their own conference. I think the Flyers have a tendency to play to the level of their competition. They’ll get blown away now and then, but so has everyone else including North Carolina, Clemson, Notre Dame, Georgetown, Illinois, etc. Dayton showed what they’re capable of when they played Marquette. Granted their schedule is very weak, but they win, and that’s why you play the game.

If Dayton doesn’t beat Xavier, that doesn’t mean that their not a good team. There’s a lot of teams that haven’t beaten Xavier this year. And every team in the Top 25 has lost to someone, most of them more than once, and some 5 or 6 times. And they’ve lost to teams that are not ranked. Yet they continue to be ranked. Dayton beat Marquette and they’re ranked higher than Xavier. The polls are a popularity contest and RPI is an inaccurate measurement of a teams ability. Every year in the NCAA tourney teams from small conferences with low RPI ratings beat the so called BCS schools. All they need is a chance.

It is “they’re” and not “their” my friend. You must attend UD.

Sorry Howard, but the A-10 is no equivalent of the Horizon league. The Horizon league is nothing but a collection of community colleges and commuter schools who have extremely low academic standards-such as Wright State.

Phil, I’m a Flyer fan, but at least one that is realistic. There are 32 conferences and the A10 and Horizon League are ranked #10 and #11 respectively. Let’s not pretend that there is a huge difference. It makes us look bad to ignore reality. Look at the fact, Wright State beat St Bonaventure home and away. When you post non-sense, it makes all UD fans look like idiots. To Raider fans, we are not all idiots.

not only do we have whiners about being 18-2 and our SOS…but now we have spelling police….give me a break!

Do your research Travis. The A10 is currently ranked 9th, Horizon 11th. The Horizon is typically a one bid conference while A10 consistently gets anywhere from 3, 4, or even sometimes 5 teams in the tourney. The two conferences are not as close as some always seems to claim. Everyone also fails to recognize that Butler literally carries the Horizon. http://www.realtimerpi.com/rpiconfMen.html

There is only one reason why Dayton is not ranked and it goes to the fact that they are not seen. Outside of the Marquette game only local tv has covered them. This team has its flaws but when they are going they are fun to watch. They will only get better with just Little as the only senior.

The Horizon League is so bad Detroit can’t win a game in the League but yet beat St. Louis.

Yep, the future is bright. With Benson,Searcy and Kavenough down low jammin balls down instead of missing layups we’ll be a force to be reckoned with. I believe Mr Huelsman will see a lot of bench time and Little will be gone. Sorry guys and gals, Huelsman and Little do nothing for me. Go Flyers!!!!

Rob L. played a terrific floor game Sunday. He is really maturing in terms of running the show. He seems much more patient in the half court sets. Early in the year, I think, he felt he had to get it done alone as witnessed by some poor shot selection. He still puts pressure on the defense as he attacks after a rebound, but seems to have a better sense of what’s available offensively by backing it out and letting the guys get their spacing, and etc.

Does anyone know of a UD / Flyer Blog where a person does not have to read about WSU vs UD continuously and the personal attacks . It is getting a bit old. Doesn’t WSU have their own Blog? I like watching both teams but their are differences and as such could be discussed at History of school and AD leveI. I thought the idea of the Blog was to discuss the article at hand, upcomming games, and UD basketball. Discussing SOS , RPI , and such is getting a bit old. The only way to settle all this is on the court, not with a lot of talk. Money rules and as such I doubt it is in the cards for the local teams to meet right now. I think it will happen, but we are a few yrs away. As long as the big conferences grow, lock in tv contracts the rest of B-ball will have to be on its toes and try to grow incrementally , knocking off the BCS schools every chance they get. They need get into good pre season tournaments, and play tough away games . Hats off to Xavier for getting into this mold. Teams from all the perceived lower conferences have to do the same, to change the perception. I think the NCAA should limit conference team to 12-14 teams in a league, but not sure that will happen , $ s rule. I hope I did not make any spelling errors as I don’t want to bother with spell check. I can spell suck, but I prefer not to us that word , it reminds me of little kids and lollypops, which I never liked as a kid or now. Relating to the article, does anyone know of a source to watch some of the old historice UD games? I never lived in the UD rea during tis era and it would be interesting to see some of these games, not just one or 2 play clips? Thanks

Everybody has there opinion about teams and conferences and strength of schedule. But somebody please explain to me St. Mary’s ranking? I will admit Dayton gambled and was unlucky on there schedule they have played but if this is the case for always shunning Dayton out of the top 25 than somebody should try to explain St. Mary’s ranking.

Goldelks, St Mary’s has a better Strength of Schedule than us and a better record. They are 9-1 on the road (not neutral courts). We have two bad losses and one quality win on a neutral court. We need to improve our Strength of Schedule if we want to get respect. Playing patsies at home does not impress anyone.

Sorry Travis and Wayne for offending your delicate sensibilities. I am a strident supporter of UD basketball and I’m not going to stand by and watch WSU fans come on this blog and try to claim that they are equals to UD basketball because THEY ARE NOT AND NEVER WILL BE!! Wright State is a second rate program in a second rate conference-that is fact. Sorry if that offends you. If you want to apologize to WSU graduates for this, just tell them the next time you order at the drive-thru at Burger King.

St. Mary’s has a better strength of schedule? Are you kidding? You spend too much time on sites that have their own way of calculating strength of schedule. In the RPI (remember the ranking used by the committee) UD has a 187 SOS while St. Mary’s is 253. St. Mary’s has no major victories (or do you consider SDSU a major win).

I read more talk from UD fans about WSU than any other school. When you come to the Cintas Center, be ready for our “WSU is better than UD” chants. It is gonna be fun!

Phil, as a WSU grad who comfortably earns 6 figures a year with my low-academic-standard education, I’m still quite proud that I didn’t go to the UD degree factory. I’m one of the least successful people that I went to school with at WSU, and, wouldn’t you know it, I don’t display the hubris of a UD “graduate” at work.
