Duquesne coach praises Flyers
On the Atlantic 10 coaches teleconference this week, Duquesne’s Ron Everhart bemoaned the fact that star guard Aaron Jackson wasn’t 100 percent in the 78-69 loss to Dayton on Saturday, although the 6-foot-4 senior, who suffered a bruised tailbone in the Dukes’ previous outing, still played 37 minutes and scored 18 points.
But Everhart was complimentary of UD.
“Dayton did a great job defensively against us,” he said. “It was a very good college basketball game and a hard-fought one. Those guys made some free throws down the stretch and created some turnovers that led to a victory for them and defeat for us.
“All in all, we played hard and I liked our effort. But they’re a good ball club. It kind of gives us a gauge to see how far we have to go to compete at that level every night.”
• George Washington, which hosts UD on Thursday, shot a season-high 63.8 percent from the field and 80 percent from 3-point range in its 88-83 loss at Duquesne on Jan. 14. The 63.8 shooting was the Colonials’ best effort since 2005 and the third-highest accuracy rate in eight seasons under Karl Hobbs.
• The Flyers are 6-0 this season in games decided by five points or less. … Their 13-game home winning streak is the longest in the A-10. … They’re 35-4 under coach Brian Gregory when they score at least 75 points.

If UD is 35-4 when they score 75 or more points as the article says, that is even more reason to give more quality playing time to Lowery, C. Johnson, and Thomas because those guys can score some points.By GregS

We have played a lot of weak teams this year, but GW is probably the worst of the lot. They are god awful.By Bob

Fran Fraschilla mentioned the Flyers during the 2nd half of the Illinois/OSU game earlier this week. Fran and the play by play guy were talking about Meachum…hometown kid, already graduated, engaged to the starting point guard for St. Louis, and etc. when Fraschilla mentioned that Meachum started his career at Illinois State. Within a few seconds or so, he corrected himself and mentioned that actually Meachum started at UD, recruited by Brian Gregory-and importantly stated that the Flyers were having a good season. Right now that’s about as close as we can get to the midweek BCS TV dominance. Thanks, Fran. You call it square and harbor no hard feelings about the way the Flyers handled you in the COSIDA preseason tourney at New Mexico several years ago. If I remember correctly, David Morris was a freshmen and had an outstanding tourney. Go Flyers…defend, rebound, be aggressive on offense, and make free throws and you’ll put yourself in position to win tonight. Who can forget Witherspoon’s last second three last year?? I think it was one of maybe three losses that hurt our chances in the eyes of the selection committee. The other two…DuQ at home and LaSalle on the road.By Ed

Coach Gregory is quoted saying that GW is a good team. Of course he has to say that so his team doesn’t look past them. But come on, they have a losing record and have lost to teams that no one has ever heard of. If the Flyers lose this game, they can kiss the big dance goodbye. And if they win, it’s a road win, but no big accomplishment on their resume. Their RPI will probably drop. If the Flyers play their game, they will win. It’s up to the Coach to get them to play their game. That’s what good coaches do.By Chris

UD beat Fordham by 1 point on the last shot of the game at home. Don’t give this team a win too soon. Hopefully it happens, but we have to actually play the way we know how to play, and not like we sometimes do.By Bob

GW was revived last year, beating us with that last second shot. In conference play you have to be ready every night…no matter what conference in which you play. Wake can attest to that fact after last night’s loss. I have every confidence in BG and his staff and the manner in which they prepare for each opponent. I’m sure they let our guards know that UMASS’s guards would try to penetrate and get in the lane at every opportunity. In fact, that’s just what they did. They were able to break us down, and the result is we became vulnerable for backdoor layups, open 3s…you name it. So, it came down to execution. At some point somebody needs to “make a play”. Against Fordham, we made some mental mistakes in the final 30secs., and we needed the coast to coast Lowery layup as well as his deflection in the last 3 secs. Tonight, we need to keep Diggs off the boards and defend Witherspoon when he drifts outside. It’s all about just playing hard, avoiding the mental errors, and make some shots.By sammy

Sorry Poet. That is what happens when you type angry. The 17-2 record is something to be proud of. The gift that was a 2 point win over a poor GW team is not. I’ll be the first to say that good teams win ugly and I’ll be the first one to say when it was UGLY.By Bob

Good teams make plays when it’s on the line. That’s precisely what we did last night. Most people were “sticking a fork in us” when we were down with something like a minute and change to play. So, what happens? MJ does not hesitate and hits the bottom of the net. We get a stop and CW goes strong to the rim. Tie game. The rest is very unusual basketball history with MJ hitting the clutch freebies. Of course it was ugly, but I don’t think there is a team out there that doesn’t win a few like last night each season. I’ll bet you an Oakwood Club dinner that if you looked at the teams’ games that have a similar W/L record as us, there would be more than a handful of “playing poorly” yet getting a win. Now, it is just a matter of each player improving their game and bringing great passion and intensity to our home floor. Just win the next game, Flyers.
